Thats not even starting pay locally for PD.
The starting pay to sit in a class room and learn how to be a Louisiana Highway Patrolman is 55k. That one stings the most.

They are up there, but personal caretakers have a worse situation. They only make about 10-11hr and have to care for old people that they do not know !
If they’re a good caregiver word of mouth travels pretty fast and they often can catch on with wealthy folks.

They're completing their training.
After which, they'll be overpaid on behalf of government creating artificial healthcare demand.

I heard last night on Fox that rookie cops in NY only make $42,000/year
That's just crazy. We pay our recruits $71K while they're in the academy and the cost of living is probably half that of NYC.

Saw a story on the news a couple weeks ago that Opelousas firefighters got a raise from $9.50 to $10.50.

how can all those cops, firemen, and EMTs afford all of those cool cribs in Chicago PD and Chicago Fire?

Average pay where I live is 40k for a paramedic. I know one paramedic who is in nursing school right now and his reason is to make more money.

You have basically two types of EMS services, public funded and private. The public services pay based on tax revenue taken in for said services, and some of the public services bill third party and MCare/Caid. The only way to bring those salaries up is to increase taxes, and no one wants more taxes. Then there’s private for profit. No tax revenue, it’s basically eat what you kill, it’s all third party billing, which are usually fixed rates. Yes you can lobby for increases in MCare/Caid, but those increases are far and few between, all the while fuel, supply costs rise unmitigated. Additionally, you can charge private insurance more, but they pay based on established rates, so you can balance bill the patient or you can lobby the insurance company for rate increases, again far and few between. Bottom line, it’s hard to raise EMS salaries to what they deserve.

$15/hour to be the first responders to shootings, ODs, cardiac arrests, etc
I’m not buying this. HS kids at McDonald’s make more than $15. Got a link?

Lot of guys take jobs like this for pensions, if offered.
One of the drawbacks locally is they don't have a traditional pension, despite the high pay.

And are probably getting food stamps. Very sad.

If you make captain in a fire department it's 85-90K a year

I think people are confused and think EMT & Paramedic are interchangeable.
An EMT is entry level and provides basic services like CPR and basic first aid. they anen’t even allowed to start IVs. They also typically drive the ambulance while the paramedic is in the back working to stabilize a patient. Is $15/hour low for that, probably but it’s not way off for entry level.
Paramedics are more in line with medical professionals and they typically make around $30/hr but can make a good bit more.

Medics make more than $15/hr, EMT-B school is like 3 months, so pay and skill set is a lot less
Fire Department based EMS in Texas major cities/Suburbs are making $65K for Fire/Medic

Firefighters don’t make jack shite in Louisiana and most of the south. Every one of them that I know have side jobs or businesses or they wouldn’t even be able to afford to live
