Maybe the first dentist sucked or the 2nd dentist was the scammer?

Louisiana Dental Center I am convinced hires the bottom of dentist school grads
But fewer and fewer solo dentists are taking insurance…

avoid the super fancy places
I had a coworker years ago that was going to a “boutique/spa dentist”. She was complaining that she always had a balance after her insurance paid for her routine cleaning. Then they told her she needed about $3000 of work done. I referred her to my dentist (where I never owe anything after my routine cleaning) and he said she had one small cavity that needed to be filled. The other dentist was charging way too much for cleanings and was trying to scam her. I definitely recommend finding an independent practitioner.

You went for a 2nd opinion at the same dentist office and expected a different opinion?
You need to find a small standalone shop for a 2nd opinion and potentially for future cleaning/dental needs. I got hooked into the Exceptional Dentist group, and the only reason I haven't left is I really like the hygienist...not like that. But in 5 years, I probably have had 6 different dentists and other than trying to upsell the teeth whitening and enamel strengthening stuff; they just do their eval and move on.

Been seeing my dentist for about 5 years and never had an issue. He just recently told me I need a deep cleaning. It’ll cost me $100 bucks with my insurance so I’ll go for it but I am keeping my ear open if he starts suggesting all sorts of stuff

Not 100% sure if “deep cleaning” but some additional cleaning/procedure to gums.

Do Dentist not fill Cavities anymore?
Drill, fill, bill dentistry is pretty much all corporate dentistry does and an increasing number of private practice dentists coming up. Lot of dental school students just want to work 3 days a week churning out bad work so they can bill a lot and pull in a decent income without putting in too much effort. My fiancee is a dentist/prosthodontist that does clinical work and teaches at a dental college, she's been concerned about the quality of dental education for several years now and sees shockingly bad work across the board from private dentists and the labs they use as well as a decline in the quality of students applying to residency programs.

yes.....with the imaging now a days, they can find so many defects that no tooth is ever perfect. it's not like the old x-rays that they used to take. therefore, they can convince their patients that something is defected with their teeth. the imaging is so precise that they can find fault in a set of fricking dentures if they want to. it's bullshite.

I bought a plan with the actual Dentist Office.
$350 (2) visits a year, 1 free cleaning, 10-15% off all other needs. And you get discounts for referrals/ family plans.
Easy decision compared to paying $50-$100 a month on insurance that probably won't cover much anyway.

I went to the same dentist from childhood through college. He always poked at one of my back teeth. It was discolored. During covid I went to Brush Dental on Burbank twice. The first time she tried to get me to cap it. I declined. She talked me into it the next time. The tooth never bothered me. Now I have pain in the tooth.
I was told the older dentists were taught to leave teeth alone if they aren't bothering people. Apparently the new dentists are all taught to be proactive and preventative.

If the dentist does not have his/ her name in the name of the business, don't go there.

Avoid root canals at all costs. Most fall out.
I'd get second and third opinions. I did and saved thousands from what the first guy told me.

What kind of issues did you have with him? He was recommended to me and I was thinking about going to him.
I mean I have no idea how he is now. I’m just saying frick him because I hated him, he was my dentist since I was a kid til right after Katrina. This was in childhood til college. I knew of a few people who had issues with him, particularly parents of younger kids who would go to see him. Always a prick. But it wasn’t a huge deal, I just hated him. I also had a massive crush on his super hot daughter when I was 6th grade. His hygienist at the time was Ms Alvarez. She was awesome.
However, the last time I ever went to see him was when I was 18 or so, I had a bad chip in one of my molars. I was freaked out, had no idea how serious or not serious a chip was (never happened before).
He numbed me, and took these tools that looked like pliers I had never seen before. I got nervous and said “wait, are you trying to take it out?” He ANGRILY goes “no, do you want me to? That’s what I thought. I can be a dick, too.” As dumb as it is, I think about that every time I’m in a dentist’s office now, and to this day I still wonder what the hell was so offensive to him.
Just never sat well with me. I never went back. frick him. It’s unprofessional to talk to patients like that for any doctor, but especially a teenager in a dentist’s office with no idea what’s going on, where a lot of people are freaked the frick out by being there in the first place.
