Are you Brendan Fraser from that movie where he's been in a bunker since 1962?
I am not familiar with US Army rifles post 1945... Except for the select fire aspect and the M16... I am unsure exactly what capacity the US military actually used the ar15 design.
if I am not mistaken the sks and the ak47 are pretty much the same design.
But yeah.. I live in a bunker.

I’d rather a shotgun
Since you would be traveling by foot a lot and carrying your stuff, the amount of ammo you could carry would be a problem.

You only get one in the Zombie Apocalypse or Societal collapse. Which one is it going to be and why?
Unlimited ammo? AK all day, every day. You can't bust them.
Limited to what's the most common ammo in the area? AR.

M1 carbine would make a great zombie gun

When we are talking full size ill take my AR-15 all day, but I do like my mini 7.62 draco (technically classified as a pistol) keep it as my truck gun.

Antique wholesale M1 grands and Mosin Nagants are quite commonly found here at trade shows in central FL. Both are on my wish list

Might as well go full auto with the same gun = M2 carbine.

This is overblown, imo. Yes the AK has looser tolerances and should be/is better in dirty conditions, but ARs have come a long way since Vietnam. BCM had one ("filthy 14") go somewhere around 60,000 rounds without cleaning with only a couple ftfs. The bottom line is, AR or AK, you want a good one for shtf. I stick with Arsenal AKs and BCM ARs, although there are other great makers/importers of both. In ARs I want hammer forged barrels and barrels/bcgs that are hpt/mpi and made from the best alloys. These will hold up for a long time in the harshest conditions.

Plus it's bullet packs a little bit bigger punch.
Just get an LR 308. Its what most call an AR10.
AK is equivalent to a semi auto 30-30. 308 is superior in almost every way.
I like the AR design over the AK.

AR in .223 bc it's already in my safe with 5k rounds

Oh yes you can. Like any weapon platform that has been around for decades there have their own issues and design flaws that can make them prone to certain kinds of failure. Plenty of AK's out there with poor heat treatment, wrong materials used in crucial locations, etc. Most people will never put enough rounds through their safe queen AK to find out. Same applies to the AR.

Its way more fun to build one, every part. You can control quality all the way through. I put together a 223 version and a 308 version, spent about 4 grand on the parts. Can't beat the quality.

Has the AR15 platform actually been in combat?
Is this a real freaking question?????

This was true decades ago, not so much now. With quality parts, you don't have to worry much about it.

I don't know. What will the zombies be carrying? I'll take that.
Okay. If pushed, give me the AR. More ammo would be easier to carry (less weight/bulk). Better optics / better accuracy past 100 yards. More ammo available from local agencies/MIL.
Why do you ask, ATF?

If we're truly talking end-of-the-world stuff, give me an old, slick bolt-action 22lr, with a decent old 9-shot revolver in same caliber, and a few bricks of ammo.
A brick of 22 weighs about as much as a couple mags of the bigger calibers. My little Springfield rifle is accurate as heck, way less to go wrong in the field. And my old H&R Sportsman flip-top will shoot anything I stick in the cylinder.
No, I can't hold off a wandering horde of mercenaries with it, but I'll be mobile enough to move elsewhere and carry my gear.
