Now being operated by the ‘good guys’: Street racer’s seized Dodge ‘Hellcat Redeye’ turned into DPS patrol vehicle

quote:

The driver was later taken into custody for felony evading. In addition to an evading charge, the driver was arrested for the unlawful carrying of a weapon — a misdemeanor — after a loaded Glock 22, .40 caliber pistol was found in the front passenger seat.

Working with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, Troopers began the asset forfeiture process to seize the Dodge due to the egregious nature of this offense. On January 25, 2022, the Challenger was awarded to the State of Texas.

Since then, the Dodge has been converted into a black and white Texas Highway Patrol Vehicle, and it’s been outfitted with emergency lights and a police radio.

Sweet ride. IWDI

It’ll be 5 minutes until a Statey pulls out on the interstate trying to make a traffic stop, over corrects and power slides into a barrier

Yup. Sweet ride nonetheless.

I'm all for civil asset forfeiture for crimes like this. I live here where they do this and it's not only super dangerous, but they're legit vandals.

On I-10, they'll get a group of 10 cars and will literally block all lanes of traffic so the racers can have a clear path down the interstate. I always ride behind them with my high beams on but they probably don't even get blinded because of their rice burners are so low to the ground

I like the idea in theory.

Would avoid letting the female officers get behind the wheel.

I tend to agree with this sentiment. There are far too many dirty cops and politicians for this to still be a thing. Potential for abuse is off the charts.

So we can expect murderers and rapists to have their property forfeited to the state as well? What about dirty cops? Crooked politicians?

If that had been a 2002 Ford Focus they wouldn't have given a damn about it.

That's some BS right there. Seize the person's car because he tried to outrun the police and wasn't successful??

That's fkd up, man.

Not just outright civil asset forfeiture. Impound it, slap as many fines and penalties on it as you can, and give them a set time to pay.

After that, frick em.

From the comments after the article:

I remember when DPS started running the 5.0 Mustangs. Within 6 months, I happened by the DPS yard in Austin, and there were 30 or 40 in the yard all totaled out because the troopers couldn't handle them in pursuits. I give this one a couple of months before it is totaled, for the same reason.
