My company has asked....TOLD me I have to head to Williston for 3 months then do rotating shifts of 2/2 on a rig out there.

Housing is provided.

Are any OTers currently there or have first hand experience of what to expect?

The company I work for just set up an office in ND for this reason. I've heard the pay is great but the life sucks. I've heard lots of booze to get you thru it.

Wow. From what I've read, that's huge. The article said rent prices are really high in those oil towns. Supposedly the towns are full of thugs, though.

That is and they are, companies started building their own man camps and bringing in 1000's of single wide trailors to house employees instead of paying the jacked up prices.

every company there pretty much pays the housing which is why it's so high

I read an article about it on CNN.com and it sounds like the worst experience ever.

ETA -- Found it ( CNN: Crime turns oil boomtown into Wild West)

Right. I didn't mean to offend anyone. It's just what I've read.

My brother lives there and said the $$ is good but the cold sucks. As they say, enjoy the suck!

The pay is much higher than here in the Eagle Ford as well so that's a plus.

What company are you with? He was with Tervita but is now with Blackhawk

I learned everything I know about it from Larry the Cable Guy. They did an Only in America special about it...

I'm going to stay in TX/LA as long as there is work around here.

My assignment is only until Oct. then they will prob put me back on the Marcellus or Utica shale.

I told them I would take less money if they would just send me to the Eagle Ford they at a cracka.

Not experience with oil work, but i was in Minot (flood related) all last year and am flying back in two weeks. It can be pretty boring, but you are about to experience the best summer weather of your life. Blackjack tables in every bar if thats your sort of thing. Food sucks, but the people (locals) are really nice. Provided housing is a huge plus. I think my 2/br apartment is somewhere around $2700/Month. Luckly mine is covered by my company as well. Speaking only of Minot though, never been to Williston which is about an hour away I believe.
