Anyone old enough to remember when you had to cut books open?

I’m reading an 86 year old biography right now and some of the pages are still uncut. I remember learning about this when reading the great gatsby as it’s referenced in the book and our teacher basically had to explain to us millennials that this is how they used to come. Kind of cool to have something old enough that’s the real thing. I remember a lot of more contemporary books I’d read as a kid simulated the rough edges this creates when the book is closed.

I've only had to do this with special editions printed in modern times.

I sorta know what you’re talking about. When I was a kid I had some...uhhh...magazines that had the pages stuck together.

I remember seeing people turn pages of a book with a knife/nail file or some other edged device in a few movies. Always thought it was just a hollywood quirk to look cool but if I'm understanding this thread properly that was a real thing? Obviously I'm not old enough to remember this but that's pretty cool
