I dont remember doing anything close to this when I was in school. Granted it was awhile ago. Talk about anxiety ridden task for a 2nd grader. My kids school does this from k-4th.

Your snowflake will survive. Raise your expectations a little.

Is it just having to solve math problems quickly?

I dont know what fast math is.

When I was in fifth grade a remember having 100 math problems and being timed. The whole class did it, and you raised your hand when finished. Then it was graded for accuracy.

yeah pretty much. they sit on a computer. the program spits out an equation and they just have to key it in. if they dont answer it within 3 seconds they get it "wrong".

We all had to do slow math. Slowest one wins.

We did multiplication tables and flashcard games for simple math when I was in grade school. Is that what you are talking about?

Fast math is where you have to figure out math problems while having firecrackers lobbed at you, right?

We had races to do a multiplication chart in 4th grade. We were ranked.

Mega Dog, Top Dog, Elite Dog, etc. Stuff like that. Made it fun as hell to go home and practice.

Highest I ever got to was 2nd highest..damn asian

my dad used to make me watch some vhs when I was in elementary school he bought off an infomercial that taught this math a long time ago. I am glad I had that tape (Human Calculator) taught me to multiply quickly in my head.

The grade's given for fast math are not going to be a major percentage of your child's grade; However, the skills learned doing fast math will be very helpful later. Your child is learning to perform under pressure and to do simple calculations quickly. Also, fast math at early ages helps pick out special needs or students who need supports quickly.

I was taught something like that.

When multiplying by large numbers..

16*12 = 8*24= 4*48 = 2*96

It's not. When I was in elementary school 20-odd years ago, we often did quizzes where we had a sheet of like 50 multiplication problems and we had to try and accurately answer as many as we could in 5 minutes.

Problems like 32 x 17

Cram math down all kids' throats at a young age. Make them appreciate it. It advances their logical and deductive reasoning skills and prevents them from being jobless in their 20's
