We may be making the move from Louisiana to Texas over the summer. I have 3 school aged kids that are currently in a small Catholic school. The school has a good academic environment and the teachers are very caring. I am hoping to find something similar in Kingwood but because of Covid I can't tour the schools. I know they have St. Martha's and also I've heard the public schools in that area are good. Can anyone provide their opinions on the schools in that area?

My husband needs to be able to get to Beaumont as well as Houston, so we want to stay on the East side of Houston.

The distances are pretty relative, honestly.

Like a poster said above, Kingwood is in a major flood zone.

I have lived in Kingwood for 15 years and all three of my kids have gone through the public schools. They are highly rated ( some more highly rated than others) I believe you would be very happy with the school system. I have a senior and a sophomore in high school and one in middle school now. I am sure you could look up the report from the state on the latest ratings for them all.

Elementary: probably 8-10 schools. Willow creek is probably the highest rated. Mine went to Deerwood, Bear branch, shadow forest, green tree, hidden hollow are all similar and know kids that have gone there. I don’t know much about Foster, Woodland Hills or elm grove

Middle school- three schools- Riverwood is probably the highest rated, but creekwood is considered to be very good as well. Kingwood middle is the other and is also considered to be a good school.

High school, two high schools Kingwood and Kingwood Park. Both highly rated. Kingwood is 6a and k park 5a. Mine go to Kingwood

Kingwood did flood during Harvey fairly significantly. However a majority of homes did not . Kingwood high school was out of operation for 9 months

Thanks for the information. Do you feel like the Catholic school and public schools(Willow Creek, Shadow forest, Bear Branch) are academically equal in Kingwood? Do you find any schools more welcoming than other schools.

Unless you're talking about the elite private schools (inner loop area) or the CHarter schools in the 'hood the Public schools are as good the private.

you're safe in a public school in K'wood, Tomball, Cypress, Katy, Clear Lake, Friendswood etc.

I know a couple families that send their kids to st Martha’s and it is highly thought of, however, I didn’t see the need to spend the money when the public schools are as highly rated as they are.

We have been in Kingwood since 1995. Wife taught for Humble ISD here in Kingwood for probably 15 years but now teaches in New Caney ISD. My son also graduated from Kingwood HS. My daughter is in 5th grade at Deerwood. She will be at Riverwood next year. Schools are great. Probably some of the best around H-town. My son played football and wrestled. It kinda sucked on that part because back in Monroe, high school football is like a religion. In Kingwood, it is an afterthought. Most of the parents leave the stadium (which is Humble HS's anyway) after the drill team and the band are done at halftime. That shite used to pizz me off so bad but hey, the golf and baseball teams are legit.

We flooded in Fosters Mill in Harvey. We went through all the other flood events without so much as a drop of water on our street. We ended up renovating and selling that house. We now live right off Mills Branch in the back in Greentree. I highly doubt that part of Kingwood will ever flood that bad again but the other area that floods in Kingwood now is the area near where Perry Homes built out and mis-handled the drainage. I would not move over there.

Kingwood is a great location to get to Beaumont. Way better than the Woodlands. Just run the backway out and come out by the FM 1960 bridge and go hit 90 in Dayton. Pretty much a breeze and can be done in about 1 hour with zero traffic.

The biggest factor for academic outcomes is going to be the quality/values of parents. The whole area has one of the lowest crime rates in the Houston metro area, so that helps provide a good learning environment for all area schools. But when looking for elementary and middle schools, also look for areas that do not have apartments zoned to the schools.

The apartment thing will be unavoidable for high school. Either KW HS will still provide a good quality education.

Be aware that the Catholic School does not have the resources to provide the specialized assistance that the public schools do.

The majority of the areas that flooded are areas that were visibly mapped to flood plains. So for long term planning, just move to an area that didn’t flood. This is very easy to do.
