What kind of car? How much were the notes? The terms? Would you do it again?

My coworker did a deal like this for her son. I had considered something like this before also. Cheaper than my cable bill.

You might want to read the small print on the bottom.

The actual cost is $244 a month plus taxes. You know you can watch pornography for free on the interwebs, right?

Leasing is not a terrible idea under the right circumstances. Do your research.

Leasing for your son... sounds like a terrible idea.

to break it down to very simple terms, you are paying for the brand new experience and cost, then after its no longer new you hope to get book value for it when you turn it back in because they charge for high mileage and when the term ends you buy it on the spot for remaining lease price or they start deducting for all damage and they tell you how much you may owe to get out of it

Never lease a car unless it is 0 money down, 0 security deposit, 1st month payment is waived, and it comes with 15,000 miles or more per year.

And then don't do it because the leasing company will do all kind of shenanigans if you try to turn it back in.

Only lease it if you can afford the residual value at the end of the lease and want to keep it, and you can get the terms above

About $10K for 3 years of use. Not all that terrible. She did it for her son thats in h.s.

A $25K+ttl Camry after 3 yrs might only be worth 15K anyway.

There’s a few threads in the sticky on the Money Board.

I’m a proponent of leasing for the right reasons and situation. There’s a lot of misconceptions about leasing, and it allows the dealership to hide and skew a bunch of costs. Plus there’s new terms and a different process, so you have to understand that going in.

It can make sense in some situations. Leased cars require minimum insurance levels and must be regularly maintained and kept in good shape. Otherwise, there are fees and penalties at turn-in.

For a HS kid, I’d recommend buying something a couple years old. If you consider it over the same term (3 years), buying a 2-3 year old Camry and then selling it 3 years later, you will be much better off and not have to hassle with the turn-in process of a HS kids abused vehicle.

If the mileage works and you won’t trash the car, then it could be great. There is a huge rabbit hole of info on the subject but the basics are that you will not get the best deal in Louisiana. Ny area, Florida, some models in Texas. You will do better to look up a broker and have the car shipped here. It’s an enormous difference in price that the local guys cannot compete with because they don’t have the volume. I did it and it works.

^ Very brave.

I had a 15 explorer for my better half. We didn't go over miles and had decent equity when trading it for another vehicle. Traded it in because I got out of the military and my home state wanted to tax us at original sales price to register it.

In the words of my CPA, a lease is a fancy term for a rental.

While leasing doesn't work for me I think it is perfect for people like my sister, who is a school teacher. She leases a new Camry every three or four years so she always has a nice, reliable car that she never has to pay for maintenance on.
She just budgets X amount a month for her car just like one would for rent or utilities or anything else.
