ok kingfish, i swapped out my JVC head unit on my 2006 sequoia. here's what i needed:
- double din head unit
- special steering wheel remote harness (if i wanted to retain the steering functions)
- special amp-converter to properly power the built-in amp (or i could replace it as well..along with ALL THE BUILT IN JVC SPEAKERS)
- special 'nanny-state' adapter so I could run all my apps on the head unit on my android phone without the bullshite rules put in place by the guvment
- had to trash the OEM built-in DVD system and player because there was NO adapter that would allow me to retain usage of that system
- had to wire my own backup camera and purchase said backup camera
so dont sit here and tell me things have gotten easier with OEM radios since 2006 because I know thats bullshite. rounded bevels and tight car integration with non-radio features makes swapping a head unit in a recent model vehicle practically impossible unless you're buying a bottom-of-the-line ford escort without any car integation features
eta when all was said and done the wife hated it and wanted to go back to the sub-par audio & features from the built-in head unit.

I'm having to do the same in a 06 Tundra because of the JVC factory system. If you don't use the factory amp you have to replace all the speakers too.

If you have a 2013-14 F150 you will need about $300 worth of adapters and wiring harnesses plus the cost of the new head unit. Newer factory radio systems can be a real pain in the arse to modify/upgrade.

Over the last 3 years, I have replaced 6 head units in 5 cars within my extended family. Vehicles ranged from 2010 to 2014. I was able to install all will relative ease using adapters from about 2 or 3 sources. No, I did not install any backup cameras and none were existing, but that is NOT what the OP was asking about. Two of the units had steering wheel control systems and at least 2 had factory amps.

My 2007 tundra with the jbl amp and speakers took about 30 minutes start to finish. Changing out the headunit and amp are 2 different things though.

Correct. Dad had a customer in a few weeks ago. 2008 chevy tahoe, no sound from stereo. Diagnosed as a bad amplifier. You can NOT use an aftermarket amp, must use GM. $600 for the amp, so the customer looked into bypassing the amp by going aftermarket head unit, nope no can do, because all the speakers are wired to the amp, not the head unit. And the amp wont work with aftermarket head units so even if the amp worked, you can't upgrade that way. It would take a complete rewiring of the audio system to upgrade this car, FAR above what an average person could do.

I installed this along with 2 6x9 Jensen triax speakers in my 76 Monte Carlo.
I was pulling some 1979 poon after that

LOL MY 1969 Ford Fairlane still has the dealer installed under dash 8 track player to go along with the dash mounted AM AND FM radio.
God I love that car.

No, like I said that's a completely different thing from what the OP was asking.
