I've been taking the stuff for about 15 years and don't feel like I need it any longer. Recently, I started running, working out and eating right. I've lost a bunch of weight and feel better than I have in years, so I want to get off the anti depressant. However, I've heard some pretty bad stories about getting off the drug.

Anyone have any experience with it?

I haven't done it myself, but have had a few friends and coworkers get off various anti depressants.

my advice is to tread very lightly and do it under the supervision of your doctor. I have seen some folks crash pretty damn hard when coming off that type med.

that said, it helped them through some damn tough patches (i.e. losing everything during Katrina, death of loved ones, etc.).

Thanks! It helped me also, nothing as bad as losing a loved one or being homeless, just your ordinary anxiety over work and providing for the family.

glad you are feeling better. glad you had the meds to help you out and are now completing the process by backing off them. that is how things are supposed to work!

this...discontinuing any ssri should be done very gradually, and you may experience what may feel like bizarre "symptoms", both physically and with regard to your mood..."brain zaps" are very common, as well as sleep disruption...i'd suggest finding an online article which lists a variety of possible effects so you are prepared in advance...good luck!!

Be sure to taper off. You'll have some pretty bad headaches, and if you start feeling like doing weird stuff. .. get back on it. There shouldn't be any shame in our brains needing help making a chemical that we don't have enough of.

I took it for about a year or so 16-17 years ago. I was prescribed one extended release pill per day, but usually took 3-4. It was pretty expensive then (plus I was poor, may also still be expensive not sure), and I lost my insurance when I quit my job, so I couldn't afford to keep taking it. So when I ran out, I stopped completely. It was bad coming off of it. Constantly had headaches, couldn't sleep, couldn't stand being in lit rooms or outside. I was very lethargic, I remember getting hit in the head with this metal bar and just sitting there looking at it wondering what the frick just happened. Good luck getting off it, just make sure you work with your doctor.

I take it. Don't quit it cold turkey. Trust me. You'll feel like shite.

Talk to your doctor. Have them gradually wean you off of it with a lower dosage each month you refill.

Like everyone else said: you have to taper off this drug. Discontinuing it all at once will cause major problems (worsening depression, severe anxiety, suicidality, etc.). Consider doing it under advisement of whomever prescribed the drug.

What mg. dose are you on? I take 50 mg 2x daily. I feel like it doesn’t so much but my moods have stabilized and that sense of doom I always had is minimal.

I was on Effexor for Neuropathy for a few months. Absolutely taper off under a doctors supervision. I tapered my doses coming off and it was still hell. I would get dizzy and had trouble sleeping. The worst part is the brain zaps. It feels like someone is sending electrical shocks to your brain...it's miserable.

Just stick a finger up his arse during the blowjob and Effexor will get off.

Taper off but sub with something else milder like Lexapro. Then gradually wean yourself off the Lexapro.

Not Effexor but antidepressants will make you gain weight like crazy. Got up to 225 before getting off them and back to about 200

Wow, you come off as a total insensitive a-hole with this post.

Having minor mental health issues that require medication doesn't mean you are "crazy". Consider yourself really blessed that you don't have this problem in your life.
