My buddy has been teaching in Indonesia for about 15 years. Loves it. Even got himself a little SE Asian wife a few years ago (no pics).

It was hard. You had to memorize in what square a series of circles appeared and other puzzles..

Thailand would be cool. But European beaches, women, food, and beer is calling me.

I taught in Oita prefecture Japan for almost two years. Lived with families. Called it Camp Japan. Totally changed my life. Nobody regrets doing it. Seriously. Best thing ever, will influence you for s lifetime.

For instance, I have a wife, three teens and a business and I’m going on by myself to Thailand for three weeks in November. Being in Asia, by yourself, having to figure it all out, has been one of my lifelong passions. Love it. Gives me an edge. I feel compelled- probably because of my experience in Japan.

One of my daughters lives in Tokyo. She said to tell you you can’t afford it.

A friend of mine did it right out of grad school. Japan. He said he hated it because he ran out of touristy things to do really quickly and he realized he was surrounded by people who don’t speak English.

He also said that he was being forced to work 7am-7pm most days due to meetings, tutoring, and conferences. YMMV though.

I had a buddy in special forces and when I would ask what he was doing in south America or the middle east he always responded with "teaching people english".

Always made me laugh

Attended an international high school in Norway for 2 years. I know some teachers that would spend a fews at a school and move on to the next. Great way to see the world if you want to.

Yeesh...

I say join the military. Gotta go through a lot of shite, but you'll get a sense of purpose, pride, and belonging. Plus you'll probably get to travel to new places.
