Miss Hogwall probably has a job at Duke incoming. She’s from the area and loves it. I’ve only been for work and wasn’t super impressed. Seems more chill which is what we are looking for.

Currently live in the triangle.
Lots of good food, sports are big here, still the “south”, 2 hours to the beach 3 to the mountains. COL is not low

RDU is a truly decent place to live. Yes, inside the Triangle is busy but 10-20 minutes outside of the metro areas, Raleigh and Durham, life is good. 2+ hours to the beach, 3+ hours to the mountains and a plethora of lakes, with culture, entertainment, sports with the several colleges and the NHL Hurricanes...also, the public schools are decent with several charter and private schools in the area. Wish you nothing but the best!

3 hours to the beach sounds incredible. Definitely would miss my close access to the mountains here. Being closer to the beach would be nice though.

Depending on where you’re going, you can be in the smaller foothills (uwharrie, pilot mountain) in 1.5hrs…. Western NC (asheville, boone, etc) is 3+

I've been here for 7 years now. Very nice area but growing at an alarming rate. People are from all over and sometimes not friendly. Housing is not cheap and traffic can get congested in certain parts of the area. I do not regret the move one bit, we do enjoy it here.

Currently live just SW of Raleigh in Holly Springs and have been in the area for about 15 years. Love it here.
We live by Harris and Jordan Lake with easy access to local outdoors type stuff. Fishing and canoeing. Beach is close by, Mountains are close by, several areas with lakes are close by. If you're outside of Durham crime is very low and things are improving in Durham. Schools are generally good. Overall it's a very attractive place as far as landscape goes as well.
Real estate has gotten pretty expensive here about double the prices from 2020. Also as other folks have said, the massive growth over the last 15-20 years has brought tons of traffic, Californians, Bostonians, New Yorkers and other assorted Yankees that are dead set on changing the local places and politics to make them just like their failing states.
Not sure what you've seen of the area when you were here for work. A quick visit isn't probably going to be impressive, it's a place that gets better when you live in it for a while and not really a place that thrills you over a short visit or long weekend.

I haven't lived there since the late 1992 when I was in law school but have lived in or close to NC most of my life and travel to Raliegh for work fairly often.
The Triangle has a very similar outdoor culture to the more populous areas in CO. People like to be outside. If you are a big skier it might sting a little but you are about 3 hours from east coast "ice skiing", if you can set an edge on NC slopes you can ski anywhere. On the beach side you have the Outer Banks which is you like to be away from the crowd in incredible.
The food scene is good and the brewery scene is good. IMO there are better places to live in NC but it has easy access to pretty much the whole state.

Been gone 20 years. As I remember it:
- Four seasons like clockwork. From someone who's spent most of his 60+ years in the deep south I wasn't ready for the winter.
- Very nice area. No mountains but does have hills.
- Both beaches and amazing mountains are accessible.
- Great golf in proximity.
- More basketball than football type place.
- Vinegar BBQ was found wanting. Could benefit from TX BBQ.

I fly fish up here for trout. Looks like to do that near RDU would be a bit of a hike?

Grew up fly fishing on the Davidson and Pidgeon in Pisgah National Forest. It is excellent fishing but probably 3 hours from Durham depending on where you end up living.

Apple cider vinegar, ketchup, brown sugar, lemon juice, salt, cayenne, black pepper...mix that up in a mason jar and keep in your fridge. Can't ask for a better vinegar based sauce.
