I had a knee reconstruction when my boy was 9 months old. I barely beat him to walking.

I was 36 when my second kid was born. 3So I’m an older dad. Some parents at my kids’ school are well into their 40s so I do not feel so bad.

My dad was 37 when I was born. I was the first child as well.

Eta: I’m 32 and my wife is 29. We don’t plan to have kids for a few more years. If we had them now, there would be too many compromises that she and I would have to make with our careers — and neither of us is in a position to make any compromises at this stage in our careers, so we agreed to just put off the whole children thing until we’re both at a place in our lives and careers in which we are comfortable and can afford to sacrifice more on the professional side of things. Thank God, because as of today, I am way too immature to handle being a parent.

When I saw the thread title, I thought dang, that’s me - my Dad was 40. Then I click on the topic and see the Edwards age, and I say, nah, not me.

Last ditch effort at having a son after 2 daughters. My Dad was 40 when I was born.
He wound up changing from a night shift job he had had for a long time to a new job on days to spend more time with the family. Never realized it was a deal until later. We threw the ball and went to LSU games just like every other kid

Same here. Brother and sister 10 and 8 years older, so he could have been done with kids at 50. Instead he had to keep working harder, which he did. And no, he never missed a ball game, he kissed my mom every day and told her he loved her, and he wore a suit and cowboy boots to church every Sunday. I was lucky to have such a kind and loving Dad. Lord knows I might have just given up and quit if someone told me I was going to father a child at age 40.

I know Edwin Edwards’ fathered a son at like 85-86

It’s selfish as hell for people that old to have children. The little boy never really gets to know his father. Sure the kid is happy to be born and all but I digest. That’s if EWE is even the father.

My dad is 70 and I am 26. He is already much slower mentally then 10 years ago. I worry everyday that I am slowly losing him.

A friend of mine’s dad was like 54 when he was born. He was the youngest of like 5 kids. His dad died when we were 12 or 13. Another middle school friend of mine’s dad had served in World War 2 (this was in the 80’s), so he might have been even older, and his dad didn’t pass till around 2010.

Not me, but there is an old guy up the road who's wife died in his late 60s early 70s I believe.

He remarried a lady 2 years later in her mid 40s.

She got pregnant about a year in.

His boy is 10ish now. And the old man still looks the same as he did before the kid. It's kept him going.

Poor kid has nephews that are my age.

I grew up with a guy whose family was die hard pentacostal church people. Women had to wear dresses, couldn't cut their hair, no makeup etc. He was the youngest and had 10 brothers and 15 sisters. His dad was 73 when he was born.

When we were teenagers, his oldest brother was nearly 60. He had a nephew that was 20 years older than him. It was interesting hanging out over there. They always had a Friday night family dinner and all the siblings that lived in the area would come over. It was like a damn medieval feast over there every week.

He just died last year at 95, but trying to due the math is a lot more difficult than it looks. His grandfather, former President John Tyler was born in the 18th century.

Has your dad been examined by a doctor and has been diagnosed with a medically recognized cognitive degeneration disorder?

If not, the best thing you can do for your dad is talk to him about your concern. Make him get checked before it's too late. If it turns out nothing is wrong, then convince him to use apps on his phone or computer that are designed to stimulate brain function. Have him get involved in doing something creative, like woodworking, mechanics, build a computer, anything to force him to use his mind and body and not just watch TV. Get him to perform some volunteerism.
