Yeah that was the condensed version. I left out the dad part. The dog howled and cried when I left it. It followed me down river rather than go back to his owner. I walked the dog in water shoes off trail 250 yards to the forest road. But the owner was on other side of river.
He was a total jerk about the dog.
I think that dog was intentionally running away from it's owner and to this day I regret not bringing him home. He was so cool. I made him breakfast and gave him my Jerky.

You still live in Colorado?

Just spent July and August camping in this Jeep. Mostly BLM land west of the Mississippi, but also had to find some urban places. Truckstops, rest stops, dirt roads off random interstate exits. All alone.
Tn, Tx, Nv, Az, Ut, Co, Nm.
No issues in two months except the one night spent outside my cousin's place in an industrial area near I25 in downtown Co Springs. Treaker almost got my bike off but woke me up and I chased his sorry arse off.
Once in a while locals would ride by on the 4WD trails in their loaded Can-Ams or Polaris's blasting music for a midnight ride. Nothing wrong with that.

At least he got to camp with a cool new buddy for a night.

Some of us were born in the country were not pussies and scared of the woods
I live 21 miles from the nearest town, I don't like being in the woods at night alone because I know for a fact there are things out there that shouldn't be there.
A couple of buddies and I were in high school and stopped a few miles from the house in the woods to smoke a few cigarettes. As we're standing there in the dark smoking, we hear branches start breaking coming toward us. Then loud popping. Like 3-4inch saplings being snapped off.
We haul arse, and get stuck. And hall arse, and get stuck. And make it back to the house, none of us sure of what it was, but talking ourselves down saying it had to be a bear.
We go back in the daytime. Starting about 50 yards from where we were standing, it looked like a wrecking ball rolled through the trees... 8ft off the ground.
And those saplings, they were indeed snapped off... Eight feet in the air.
It stopped maybe 10ft from where we were standing. No tracks. No nothing. Just a trail of destruction 8 ft up. No large tree fallen. Nothing.
Call me what you want, but there ain't a damned thing that dhould be alive in south louisiana that can do what we saw. Even a very large bull moose doesn't cut a path like that.
That was 25 years ago, and we still talk about it. And I still do NOT go into the woods at night without a firearm, a lighter, a light, a phone, and a machete/cane knife.
The other guys say it's some kind of big foot

I laugh and call them crazy, but I admit I can't think of anything that can snap green trees 8ft off the ground.

So the tent would be very small,
I’m 3 weeks from back packing into a wilderness area without a tent. Just going to use a sleeping pad, sleeping bag, and a simple tarp thrown over me.
I don’t necessarily go gear heavy when I go into the back country. I do have my jet boil that I can make French press coffee with. That’s a must.

There is nothing more relaxing than a night in the woods. Its more comforting to have a dog with you but being alone is good too.

Wonder what the statistics/probabilities are for assaults, attacks on those camping in the woods alone vs spending that same time in BR or NOLA?

All of us don’t need to have a 120lb woman camping with us to protect us like you do.

Buddies and I started taking the canoe down the river and finding islands to camp on when we were 14. I've gone out alone many times. Moved from the Midwest to PNW and still camp alone but always have a sidearm and bear spray on me out here. Both the people and animals are more worrying. Never had any major issues.

I did it once. I don't know what possessed me to drive up to Kisatchie Wilderness and set up my tent, but I enjoyed the solo hike early the next morning.

Camped at Wilderness Landing in Blackwater River State Park on Sunday night. Middle of nowhere. Nice campground though at the end of a dirt road that ends right at the river. Only other people there were the camp host, and an older guy in a van that we only saw once, and he left early the next morning. We were trying to find a skunk ape, but no luck, not even any signs. We paddleboard upstream a good long ways, then floated back down. The river's average flow rate is 2 to 3 miles per hour, with an average depth of 2.5 feet, white sandy bottom and beaches. One of the best rivers to float in the nation. Actually the only pristine sand river left in the nation.

Horses leave tracks. And a fricking clydesdale isn't snapping a 3inch green ash tree.
