Haven’t heard anything but their safety record is awful the past couple years.

If something preventable happened MSHA might shut them down

Heard an explosion from my sister, sounds like they are inbound to her hospital.

That would be the one. Did the change their name? She’s saying it’s American Aluminum.

Atalco alumina is the new name.
Hot caustic burns more than likely
No explosion

Looks like a LOTO procedure wasn’t followed. Or, something failed upstream.

Sulfuric and phos acid are nasty places to work, but an alumina plant has to be the absolutley nastiest place in the plant world to work.
HF, phenol and chlorine are scary as hell but not as nasty.

Assuming you mean an engineered plug… that’s a ballsy move. Not sure I’d approve work downstream of one of those in caustic service.

Yeah, I’d like to get a little more clarification from that statement.

The Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (OHSEP) said the incident happened around 3:43 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, and lasted about two minutes. Plant workers were changing a valve that was under pressure when they were burned by a high pH caustic solution. The amount of solution released is still being investigated.

No dual barrier philosophy?

No, i mean a process plug downstream of isolation valve. Probably closer to the break point
