They are currently running a $22 special from Savannah to Charleston. Considering taking the trip to go out to eat and hit a couple breweries. Do they serve alcohol and food? How comfortable of a trip is it?

I took it from Hammond to Memphis many times.

Train would occasionally run late. The food is crap but liquor made it better.

Savannah to Charleston is a short run, you should be fine

I ride Amtrak a lot. There is alcohol and food similar to that at a football game.

I enjoy taking the train. The Acela trains are the best. If you are taking a regional then I recommend spending a little extra and ride in business class.

Thought about taking it a few times, but my time is worth more to me than the money it costs to fly

I probably wouldn't take Amtrak in Georgia, but I'm a huge bigot

I never figured a train from Savannah to Charleston would have a ton of undesirables. Figured they would take a Greyhound.

Went from Laurel, MS to Greenville, SC about 10 years ago.

Pros: Nice place to read. Nice way to see the countryside. Safe and relaxing way to travel for the most part.

Cons: Food car sucked. The clientele is mostly lower class which may or may not bother you. I don't remember anything that bothered me very much.

Took one from Mississippi to West Palm Beach and the trip took like two days. It was unbearable. That was YEARS ago, though.

There were so many transients and shite. Disgusting.

I took Amtrack from NYC to Kingston, RI and it was fine and comfortable.

Amtrack is completely different in the Northeast though.

On a regional in coach there isn't much difference between Amtrak and a Greyhound.

This^^^

I've ridden Amtrak a number of times and after the first trip, where I forked over $5.50 for a beer, I bought a small ice chest and brought my own. Also, bring your girlfriend along and upgrade to a private car. Nothing quite like fricking her brains out at 80 mph

Hmmm. Alcohol, fricking , and doing rails on the rails. This might be an interesting little trip.

My daughter-in-law went with her parents from New Orleans to Chicago (just to experience it) and when the got off the train, they bought plane tickets for the trip back.

Had a buddy and his wife do it from New Orleans to Memphis but they paid extra. I think they have "levels" of tickets (maybe their own suite or section or cabin or whatever you call it)?

Took it a few times from NYC to Philly and back

Actually ran with minimal problems, on time, organized, etc

I was fairly surprised
