Looks like a fun hobby. Renting seems like an easy option, but that doesn’t get you racing. NOLA motorsports is far as frick from my house, but it’s too cool not to get into.

Anyone in the lifestyle?

Is this some weird way of you trying to find other swingers?

What’s a shifter kart? Sounds Chalmette’ish.

How old is the kid?

I had an Italkart myself for a few years and they are BRUTALLY quick (0-60 in 3 seconds) and can run 120+mph. You do not start with a shifter, especially not a kid with no karting experience. It is like starting track days with a 911 GT2 RS.

12. I’m looking for the 50 mph kind of action for him.

Seems like a perfect application for electric power.

At 12 you would normally be moving up to Junior class but he should try to get into Cadet before he ages out. Junior class can be very competitive.

For Cadet you are looking at something like a Tony Kart Cadet/Mini with a Rotax Minimax engine. So figure about 7k for a new kart and engine but there are plenty of used Cadet class carts around.

Do these have a foot clutch or hand clutch?

I had one similar to this when I was 13-14. My use of it was supervised heavily because it could do ~75 on a bad day. I never got to race it, but I learned a shite ton about working on stuff just tinkering with it. I could do an engine swap on it in about 45 minutes. Really cut my wrenching teeth on it and have a lot of fond memories of it. It was called a “quik” model IIRC. We had two Briggs Raptor engines with it which were basically just bored over 5 horse B&S engines with an open header. Loud as hell.

Hand clutch mounted behind the steering wheel, the shifter is on the right clutch on the left. You only use the clutch from a standing start they have sequential transmissions.

They are a handful on Sprint tracks (kart tracks vs actual road courses) the amount and speed of upshifts and downshifts is mindnumbing when you start out. You need a good deal of single speed seat time before moving to a shifter.
