I'm pretty sure it comes entirely from the parish sales tax.
It did.
The bottom line with St. George is that the City/Parish should concede on the school district and work with those who want to make a new one. Reform is not happening.
It's a very complicated issue. I very much support their goals but I'm not sure it will be a net gain.

quote:No, it was from a .5% sales tax vote in 1998 that was extended in 2007 (I believe it was) to issue $600 million in bonds mostly for road improvements.
Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't this funding come from the federal government .
I can't swear that there hasn't been some Fed or state matching funds along the way, but the bulk of the money spent has been from that dedicated sales tax.

Who has called that small improvement a 'huge success'?
When am I going to see an improvement of the EBR school system go from a C,D or F to an A or a B? I have NEVER seen it beeing graded favorably and when it does receive low marks, the administrators
have used various means to make the test scores not look so bad, ie, taking high grades from magnet schools and averaging them with low performing public schools nearby.

I have not seen or heard anyone call it anything but what it is, the first positive indication that the school system might be on the right track after almost 50 years of being run by the federal courts.
Exaggerate much?

quote:If you read this thread just a few pages back, that is what a poster claims to believe. I just included his comment.
Do you accept "it will be worth the higher taxes" as a fact?
I personally don't believe anything Senator Bodi White says, not after his attempt in 2008 to triple his legislative salary 3 months after he was re-elected and at the same time he tried to increase what lobbyists can spend to buy legislators meals from $50/meal to $100/meal by saying 'you can't get a decent meal in Baton Rouge for less than $50.' White also is in the real estate business and he's licking his chops to broker deals with the new city and school system to sell them real estate for new city buildings and schools.
Thankfully the lobbyist bill failed and Jindal vetoed the obscene legislative pay increase.
If you google Lionel Rainey (the other main spokesperson for the effort), you'll see that he doesn't even live in St George BUT he has been a business partner with Bodi White on getting a charter school started (which was denied) and he got White to get him a no-bid state contract by getting the state to divide a $700,000 contract into 3 smaller contracts over 3 years to avoid the $250,000/year limit which requires competitive bidding. And the kicker is his professional background is not applicable for the contract he received. One more thing, his business address is the same address as one of the convicted felons from the Champion Insurance scam that cost La taxpayers $150 million to pay off when that insurance company failed. Nothing to see there, right?
They are slimy.
ETA: Here is the latest on Rainey from just a couple of weeks ago. He is very politically connected. LINK

I have never been to a petition signing where anyone was asked to sign. The locations for gathering signatures are set-up, and generally speaking, people come to the tables eagerly wanting to sign. Some have questions, some have concerns, and a tiny minority voice some form of opposition while passing by.

Seriously? What OT poster lives in a $150K house in EBR??? Try $250, $300K and $350K and redo your numbers.
Because everyone on the OT really lives in $350K homes.
$150k is a more accurate representation of br, but I'll run $300k anyway.
Br goes from 325 to 975.
Central from 453 to 1359.
Zachary from 594 to 1782.
So now it's $30-60 a month. If $60 a month is going to bankrupt someone then they can't afford a $300k house to begin with. I guarantee those that bitch about the hike won't turn down the extra money when they sell to young couples trying to move in.
As far as commercial, I'm not a business owner so I can't comment there. If they pay 1.5x then I don't see why taxes would increase to Central levels, let alone Zachary. But if they are paying 1.5x on the same millages for schools, then EBRPSS must be rolling in money. Where the hell is it all going? Is this really the best they can do?

Not sure how we can say St George is running away..
They are threatening to take their ball and go home if the big kids won't let them play quarterback.

The same millages apply to both so even ignoring the homestead exemption, commercial property pays 50% higher property taxes based on the assessment method differential.

He's not 6. He has somehow made it to be an old bitter man. I will assume he's extremely lucky. He's completely misguided and malicious toward SG supporters and I like to come in and make fun his pasty arse.
He claims that he's a BR citizen, but doesn't live in BR. Has stated several times that he doesn't have a "dog" in the fight over SG incorporation, but he's the only poster that I will universally see trying to put the SG movement in a bad light and offers no solutions to the problems at hand. My guess is he has money invested and he stands to lose a lot if BR goes to shite. So he's trying to make it look as bad as possible. I've never once seen a thread about SG and him mention any of the positives for SG incorporation.

Fits the target market for the whole St. George BS, but also says it's not about schools or you wouldn't find the empty nester old people being the big market for it, and yet that's what they say it's about.
It's not. It's the same baby boomer mentality that go us in this mess in the first place, thinking they can run or put imaginary lines in the same. This is their last stand, and for their final closing number, they will end on dividing the city in half.
What a legacy.....

I just hope the improvement was not a statistical aberration but is the start of a trend. It's been a long time coming just seeing that small improvement occur.

It won't be just Baton Rouge they destroy, but their new St. George as well, because the.bigger the plague gets and especially in momentum, the worse it will be for St. George. This is a futile move of desperation that will destroy the whole place. Better find a place for Tiger Stadium in Prarieville.
