Locally, last year’s Baton Rouge performance stirred up a bit of controversy on its own, when Metro Council member C. Denise Marcelle gave R. Kelly a key to the city. It was later revealed that she spent about $250 of taxpayer money from her council budget on the key. She told WAFBshe gave the singer the key to promote “economic development.”

As far as C. Denise, she's not my council representative and I've never tried contacting her. Not sure how receptive she would be to my viewpoints on some council decisions anyway. I can't see where there really would be a point honestly. I could say the same about Delgado. They've both got their own agendas and everyone else be damned.

Wow, you're actually defending Marcelle giving R. Kelly a key to the city.
So you are so entrenched, that you are ok with BR giving honors to sex offenders, as long as it doesn't damage your "everything is ok in BR" mantra? Pathetic.

Not anymore than you. You actually said, "stop using facts" when someone objected to giving r kelly a key. Which insinuates that you believe people are stupid if they believe it's outrageous to give R.Kelly a key. Yet you come at it, in the guise of cost. As if money is the problem people have with it.

Yet again, i must explain the obvious to you.

This is your post

OP: Whats the big deal in giving a performer a tax paid key to the city if they are able to bring in more entertainment revenue into the city? I would guess the money BR made that night was a good bit more than what a key cost.

YOU brought the R. Kelly debate into this thread, not any SG supporter. You asked what was wrong with giving him a key. I gave my personal opinion on the matter, agree or disagree with me, I'm entitled to it, just as you are to yours.

But this kind of shite is exactly why I am leaning towards St. George as a city as well as school district. The attacks and petty comments coming from the opposition have been much more frequent and nastier than anything I've seen from the pro St. George crowd.

What part of "the money BR made that night was a good bit more than what a key cost" confused you?

1) A poster was complaining about the cost of the key.

2) Another poster made a logical statement that the cost was a non-issue since the taxes collected that evening for holding the performance most likely exceeded the cost of the key.

3) That exchange of posts had nothing to do with whether it was the right thing to do to give the guy a key.

So, reading challenged much???

I think after this people will start looking at the city parish form of gov't.

Right now we have 4 cities in EBRP.
Baker, Baton Rouge, Central, Zachary

Three cities Baker, Central, and Zachary get to elect their own Mayor and City Council.

Then at the end of the day those same citizens can elect the Mayor of Baton Rouge in the form of the City Parish Government Parish President/Mayor of Baton Rouge.

At the same time some unincorporated areas feel they are not getting represented properly. Alsen, Brownsfield, Deerford, Greenwell Springs, Pride, Port Hudson, and even Southern part of the parish. This is not recently its been brewing for years but this petition drive adding fuel to the fire. Alsen has one of the worst volunteer fire depts. due to money while they are surrounded by large industrial chemical plants which are inside the city of Baton Rouge. Seems like a money grab to me for years. If fair is fair they live in ground zero around some big industrial facilities and solid waste dump, but their community has no money come on.

*If we are going to be fair and unicorporated money stays outside of Baton Rouge why don't they have better services when they are in one of the richest parishes in the state?

*City of Baton Rouge money should stay inside Baton Rouge.

To me we need two governments
City of Baton Rouge Mayor and Council

East Baton Rouge Parish needs its own Police Jury with Parish President to represent the parish.

This would serve both parties fairly.

As far as schools we need to disband the EBRPSS. We could have Baton Rouge independent School District, southeast ISD, Southwest ISD, Northeast ISD, and Northwest ISD.

As far as people moving you will never stop that. People of all races that can afford to move to safer communities will.

If we don't watch out sooner or later developers will build shopping centers and movie theaters outside this parish which will take away from the tax base in East Baton Rouge Parish. Drive down major streets in Baton Rouge. Drive down major streets in Livingston, Ascension Parish, Zachary, and Central. Which areas are booming and it is not Florida Blvd East & Airline Hwy, Plank Road, and Greenwell Springs Road.

If SG incorporates, I would like to hope this is the next move. It seems to me that this would be an effective way of fairly governing the entire parish. Assuming that the city incorporates and it's coupled with changing the city/parish government into completely separate entities, couldn't a case be made to how SG incorporating could help the parish - by slowing the exodus from EBR to Ascension/Livingston?

And why hasn't this been more prevalent in the argument? I've constantly been thinking about this, and it surprises me that it's not coupled with the entire debate...

Whoa whoa whoa. If you are referring to me as far as complaining about the cost of the key, my argument had nothingto do with your first point and EEVERYTHING to do with your third point.

I'd vote for you. That dude is doing way more to hurt BR's cause than he is to help it. All he does it make incediary comments that do nothing but stir up the hornets nest in St. George. He has not offered one single solution to the problem. It amazes me how bad BR's so-called leadership has handled this issue.

Well damn. At least I can still avoid paying for downtown items or for keys to the city for people like R Kelly, or for a council member's trip to Obama's inauguration. The latter 2 should be considered a felony punishable with prison time for stealing taxpayer funds

As I posted earlier, when Delgado was running against Smokie Bourgeois I posted several times on the Poli Board that Delgado was a first class, politically ambitious jerk.

I was blasted by the know-it-alls on that board that Smokie was just a dumb restaurant owner and Delgado is a lawyer and the city needed more class and better educated people on the CP council so they were supporting Delgado.

I'm tempted to go back and see if any of them are now criticizing Delgado.
