My first post insinuated that most people don’t know how to read tax tables or understand how standard deductions work. Some people in high tax states making a certain amount could pay more, but the overwhelming majority will pay less. That’s an absolute fact.

Most people were already not paying anything

There are some situations where people could pay more, but a vast majority of people will pay less.

While the SD almost doubled, the personal exemption went away. Single SD was about $6K last year and the PE was about $4K, so about $10K. Now the SD is $12K, but the $4k is gone, so really a bump of about $2K for single filers.

You linked the tax tables, which does almost no good without context. I have a weekly tax reform call that discusses these issues, I promise you I know what's going on

Tax avoidance, not evasion, is the way to go.

I file on 4/15 because we always owe money.

Nah. I just don't like loaning the government money interest free. I'd rather pay them some.

I am getting killed on losing a lot of my property tax deductions and I am still over the standard deduction. I scaled up my quarterlies by $1k each quarter (just wrote the last check, mailing it tomorrow). Hopefully, it will be enough to cover, my estimates say it will be close.

A guy who gets it. I wish people understood how the tiered brackets work. "OMG, I am in the next tax bracket!" "No, like $5 of your taxable income is in that bracket."

I've heard people at work say that. A few more thousand and we'll be paying higher rates. Yeah, on that $800

The average American's taxes are pretty simple and people refuse to be educated. They will pay H&R several hundred dollars for a W-2 and some 1098's. Amazing. If you own your own business, have rental property, I understand a bit more. But so many 1040-EZ filers pay someone.

My uncle did his own taxes. He messed something up one year and spend 8 months in jail. So yeah, I don’t mind paying a cpa $800 or so.

Taxation is theft. With that said, I just pay whatever my CPA tells me to like everyone else.
