Tell us your story - what do you do there? Is the money worth it? What sort of hobbies/activities can one pursue there?
Oilfield work, the cash is great, fun activities well...
I rotate these days 28/28, have lived here before for tax reasons but decided to rotate again a few years ago.

I'm sure it's a really cool experience. Different for sure, I'd imagine.

My uncle, his wife and daughters lived there for 10+ years in the 90's and 00's. I believe he was an engineer working for Saudi Aramco. They lived in a neighborhood/town built for the employees and seemed to enjoy their time spent there. I'm sure the money helps with the enjoyment.

Like what? Come on man, teach us! What does one do in the desert? I imagine the usual outdoor activities for southern guys aren't available there.

What area are you in? Are you living in a compound, how is it when you have to go outside the compound. Everyday life there type stuff. Tips on what to expect basically.
I lived in a compound previously and it was cool enough as everything immaginable was provided free of charge. Now whenever I am around town I just stay in a hotel these days.

hot, dry, lots of flys
Most of the people you will meet are friendly and want to practice English (obviously so they can infiltrate to blow shite up), the majority of American fast food and chain restaraunts are here (think chili's popeye's etc, a KFC on every corner)
The government has spent billions educationg millions of their citizens in the west, don't assume folks do not understand you.
Act with decency and you will be treated well.

Do it if the money is too good to pass up. The standard of living in SA isn't bad.

I would honestly like to do something like this. Unfortunately, there isn't any demand for people who know how to run a Hooters.

I would not say that, there are millions of square miles of open desert and more ATV/UTV's per capita than any place on earth, fishing is ok in the gulf.
Honestly I just go to work these days, collect my money and fly home to the USa and enjoy a month off. Working 6 months a year is nice.
If you just want whiskey and women Bahrain is a short drive away and is about as open as open can get. Anything you could possibly want there and more.

I spent a couple of my formative years in Riyadh, but I don't really remember shite. My pops says we had a good time.

Most if not all of the terrorists on 9/11 were Saudi nationals.

Obviously. No one is saying otherwise. But how is life under these rules?

The wife and I lived in Yemen for 3 years, never had a problem. Made great money and got to see much of the world.

Yeah, I don't think you'd have the same experience if living in Yemen today.

My buddy is a high up at an architectural firm and spent a year in Dubai.
Said it was an awesome experience, but he was glad to get back. Said the summers were god awful but there was plenty to do
Saudi Arabia has some cool areas and is more western than I thought, but it's still very 3rd world in most areas
It would take a lot of convincing

Qatar and UAE I would consider.
Westerners can do all the drinking and partying they want.
Hell most the people in Doha are not even Qataris.

I would believe a claim that taking upskirt pics is more difficult, but some of the claims in this thread are bizarre.
