Nerve in your neck compressed or irritated. I had it for years; finally had full nerve root compression and had surgery for C5,6,7 fusion. No problems since the surgery. You could check with your doc about using a soft cervical collar to sleep in to keep your head/neck in neutral position and prevent excess flexion/extension.

If it is from the elbow to the hand than it is not carpal tunnel (does it run the same distribution as when you hit your "funny bone"?), more than likely coming from the ulnar nerve or the neck. You would need to get examined and then have an EMG/nerve conduction study to confirm.

See a neurologist. Possibly carpal tunnel.

I'm having this done on Wednesday to confirm but it's severe enough that surgery is the likely outcome. If I hold my hand straight out I can't make the pinky and the finger next to it straighten and touch the others fingers on my hand. My left hand is better but it looks like I might need the surgery there as well.

If it starts at your elbow it's more likely cubital tunnel than carpal tunnel which is in your wrist

I don't know if this actually relates....but when I was like 16, I fell asleep with my arm above my head, it went numb in my slumber, I rolled over, my numb arm fell and hit my side and startled me awake....I thought it was an intruder or someone touching me (since my arm was fully numb and it woke me straight out of sleep). I tried to 'get away' from the intruder...I ended up rolling off the bed and couldn't brace my fall since my arm wasn't working at the moment.
I got a good laugh after the fact and thankfully wasn't hurt. It was just some freak thing and never happened again.

My arm falls asleep every night. I was told its symptomatic of corpal tunnel syndrome 
It's more prevalent when I sleep on my side. Aggravating as frick either way.

Up to 3-6 months. PT generally starts in 2-4 from what I've learned. Will know a lot more after Wednesday. It's going to suck. I spend a lot of time working at a PC.

I had this same problem about six months ago. Was told it was probably carpel tunnel syndrome. I wore a brace on my wrist while I slept for 3 weeks. Problem solved.

This exact thing happened when I was a kid but I had zero feeling in my arm. I was seriously wondering if I lost an arm since I couldn't feel it at my side with my other arm.
