that's a pretty low iq take brah.

Is it? I have family in Lake Charles who still hasn't gotten paid for the damage done from last year's hurricanes cause they have to take their insurance company to court.

I'll admit, I'm a new home owner and don't know a whole lot about how flood insurance works, but apparently my relatives are getting royally fricked by their insurance company.

Seems to me if you've never been even close to flooding, then paying extra for "peace of mind" might not be worth it.

it is.

you may want to double check that.

flooding is not strictly a coastal issue.

It is just really, really cheap for people in that situation.

they are probably in a battle with a homeowners policy, not their flood insurance policy IMO. but this is just me speculating based off of very little true info you have.

never flooded before is no valid reason to not purchasing it for the future.

Sure, but it's not really an issue where I am. We had record flooding this year and I was 100 feet above it.

I'll check on the mudslide thing, but I'm also near the top of the foothill I live on, so I don't think there is much risk.

Like I said, if the flood waters rise to me, millions have likely died.

the erosion of your foundation is the real issue. Not just getting mud/water in your house.

State Farm gave me the run around and delayed getting the policy started. That’s why I’m in this mess. Just have to make it to Friday.

Flood is through FEMA/NFIP. If you aren’t closing on a new property, you have to wait 30 days.

What kind of liability coverage do you carry on your auto insurance? Geniunely curious based on your take on 500 a year for 250000 in Dwelling coverage not being worth it

Isn't handled through FEMA?

That's probably as bad as not having it.

Flood maps are largely a political product at this point. If you live someplace like Santa Fe you are probably fine without it, but if you live in Louisiana, specifically south Louisiana you are a fool to not have it. Areas of New Orleans that were covered with 5-10 feet of water 15 years ago are now flood zone X. The maps are garbage. And if you are in an X flood zone the cost really is nominal.

Agreed. My office is in an X zone. Flooded twice last year due to drainage issues in the street.

FEMA handled the claim quickly and got us back up and running faster then I expected

Get it!

I mean what is an extra $550 a year to insure your house. 2016 should have told you that flood zone X in South LA doesn't mean much of anything.

Also, I do not think 2016 was a once in 500 year rain event. I could easily see this type of event happen again in my lifetime.

Actually, the people with FEMA I was in contact during the claim process were all courteous and very helpful and got the answers I couldn't get from the adjuster group. Once the adjuster group finally got their act together and finally submitted the correct paperwork to them, the check was cut very soon after. I never had an issue with FEMA's side of it.

If you live in Baton Rouge, and didn't come close in 2016, or last night, what the hell has to happen for you to flood?

2016 was what, a 1,000 year flood? 15"+ of rain in the span of about 12 hours last night? I mean the only thing i can think of is massive rain, and then the mississippi river levees break.

Explain what “full coverage” means to you?
