I remember when my grandparents got a DVD/VHS combo box. I had to hand write instructions on how to use the damn thing..good ole days

I used to get that from my mom...was so frustrated. Then about a year later realized she was in the first stages of Alzheimer's and dementia. Now, 5 years later, she's in a nursing home and doesn't know who I am. My point is...patiently tell them how to operate it and appreciate them all you can.

My mom is 65 years old and teaches Forensic Anthropology at a university in Texas. She thinks, for some unknown reason, that I'm an IT person
She calls me whenever there are complex issues with her computer that couldn't possibly be fixed by me over the phone.
Sometimes, I'll try to walk her through something and the exchange will go like this:
Mom: explains detailed issue and asks if I have a suggestion.
Me: "ok, click on the start button at the bottom left"
Mom: "hang on a sec"
Me: "what's up?"
Mom: "I'm walking to the room where my computer is set up"
Me: "ok, you there yet?"
Mom: "Yes"
Me: "ok, so click the start button..."
Mom: "it's still booting up"
Me:"So just so I'm clear...you called me to troubleshoot an issue with a computer that is turned off and in a different room?"
Mom:"yes"
Love my mom. She's a smart lady but sometimes I just have to shake my head and laugh.

Their generation created the technology that you only use. Perspective dude. I'm really tired of the old people can't use technology schtick.

Inserts SD card from deer cam w/1000+ images into laptop, Windows 7 launches picture viewer, I hear from him "I'm not going through all these photos one at a time", I tell him how to view extra large thumbnails in Windows Explorer, don't hear from him for a long time.
Usually, if I explain it once, he gets it. I don't mind helping and he's pretty savvy with his laptop and other peripherals without much help.

The average 75 year old today unless they had a career doing manual labor has likely been using a PC for 30 years, and has had VHS decks and DVD players since the technology was introduced. I am 62 and most of the people I call for IT help are in their 70s.

My aunt asked me how to rewind a DVD movie once.
Good ol blockbuster days. I still think that would be a great troll for Netflix users that get dvds in the mail. An envelope that says "Be kind, please rewind."

No i have never received that call but my dad is a robotics technician for a DOD contractor.
Now i have received the call to help him manage money or to talk him out of buying something. He says God made him tech smart not money smart.
