all the flights from DFW to Austin kept getting bumped to the point my brother and 5 other people that were supposed to be on his flight gave up on waiting and rented a car to drive down instead.

Flew into NOLA from STL on the redeye. Turbulence was bad, but cleared up enough to get a cocktail. But that landing was terrifying. Never been on a plane that moved around like that on an approach.

People like to exaggerate their delays when it comes to air travel. Major weather delays during heavy travel times will lead to longer than normal delays for passengers, however.

Don't think the OP is exaggerating. I have friends who are in Lubbock. They were supposed to fly Lubbock to Dallas To NOLA on Sunday. They even had a Monday flight reservation just in case things turned to shite Sunday. They were told Sunday there wouldn't be an available flight till New Years Eve.
That's a pretty long delay even tho the weather in Lubbock and Dallas is FUBAR.

shite, forget Maui

Been working since 3:00 yesterday just trying to go from MSY to DFW, which included a 4 hour wait in line to talk to a counter agent, and more than six hours on call back hold (which was irrelevant by then).

I'm currently ticketed on a 6:15 flight though, unless the front cancels that one too.

Flight from Richmond to DFW cancelled this morning. Flight was still on when I checked at midnight. Now can't get me in until Wednesday night. Sucks.

If you can, try to worm your way in on standby.

I left the airport yesterday on standby because "all flights and partner flights were full", but when I came back as early as possible to fight for my spot, it turned out that not only was I able to get a seated ticket, I could pop online and change my seat from the 10-15 openings.

You might get lucky too.

The catch is that apparently (at least for American) only airport support can do standby. No go over the phone

I don't think he is. I was responding to his question about people being stuck in an airport for days.

And like I said, the issues are exacerbated when you have holiday loads and inexperienced travelers.

On a normal Monday/Tuesday from Lubbock to DFW, you could "catch up" on the Saturday/Sunday cancellations by just filling empty seats or running a slightly larger plane. But with demand high across all routes, revenue management isn't going to take a plane off MIA-RDU that running fine to satisfy the Lubbock delays.

You've also got to remember they called at the height of the delays when people have still retained their reservations. It starts to work itself out when individual cancellations happen throughout the confirmed flights.

son was supposed to fly back to DFW yesterday morning on a United flight but one of those smaller jets. We changed his flight to Tuesday night so he could stay a few extra days and hopefully avoid bad weather problems. So the flight he was supposed to take yesterday--- After 4 hrs in the air it diverted to San Antonio where it spent 2.5 hours before taking off for DFW. I was watching flightaware and it took a pretty evasive flight path through nasty looking radar. I bet it was a pretty unpleasant flight.

In-laws were supposed to get in Saturday night from Sacramento to DFW, but flight was diverted to Austin. American kept putting up flights from Austin to DFW, but would take them down. They finally said frick it and rented a car around 5 pm Sunday. The communication from American Airlines was just horrible.
