quote:I started infrequently binge drinking when I was 12, and did it more and more often until I turned 21. Around then I started drinking every day, anywhere from 16-24 beers or a 5th of whiskey. By the end I would normally consume at least a liter of whiskey a day but often more. I’d buy those small bottles of liquor to keep in my pockets at work on top of what I’d drink at home.
Do you mind if I ask how much you were drinking, Slayer? Curious how much it took to do that kind of damage before you were 30.

Outpatient rehab seems risky for certain addictions... wouldn’t environment play a role???

Tons of people out there with this mess. Its the next steps that can make or break people. You are right though, your thinking becomes much clearer. When I was at my worst I had alcohol in my system 24/7. IDC what you think, you are not in control. The fact that you cannot stop putting poison in your body should alone prove that but you put a mental block there along with the lying, spending, etc. It is a vicious cycle. Sadly, because it is substance abuse no one cares nearly as much.

Im going out on a limb here but when everything opens back up rehabs might be a great investment. I have a feeling a lot of folks have been drinking way more than usual this past year and have no clue the hooks they now have inside their body.

Any advice for parents of a drug addict? Our daughter started with marijuana at 14. She then moved to pain pills and cocaine which led to meth and heroin by age 19. She is now in her mid 20’s and has been in 10+ in patient treatment programs as well as multiple IOP programs with no progress. As soon as she leaves a locked down program she starts using again.
We know that we should not enable her addiction, but what can we do to help? Thanks for sharing your experience.

Love her, don't coddle her. But don't disown the girl or keep her away from your home.
Do your best to keep her alive and knowing you care. Eventually things come around.

I work for a treatment facility and this is the advice a counselor/professional will give you: cut all ties, quit offering any kind of support/help. That includes housing, food, money anything.
When she has had enough she will ask for help.
If you want to offer help again, make the offer. If she doesn’t want it, tell her you love her but will not help her kill herself. When she is ready, to call you and you’ll be there.
Beyond that, you need to get into AlAnon. I would assume you’re fairly codependent as most addict/alcoholics parents are.
Her addiction is drugs, yours is likely trying to help her.
I say all of this while my brother is out there killing himself. I’ve told him I’ll get him a bed as soon as he wants it, but until then I can’t be around him. It sucks, it hurts, but I can’t help him kill himself. He already left treatment that I helped get him into after 24 hours of being there once recently. So I’m done.
All of that said, if you offer her help and she wants it, I will be more than happy to help y’all find a top of the line place for her.
Edit: had my parents cut me off much sooner than they did, it would’ve saved me years of drug use and multiple overdoses.

Lovingly disengage from her as your carrying her prevents her from learning how to fight through and stand on her own .

Thank you for the advice. As you know, backing away is hard even though you know it needs to be done. We just gave her an ultimatum after assuring her of our love: check into a long term program today or we will cut off all financial support. A complication is that she will be off our health insurance in October, and we can’t afford to pay for treatment without insurance. Addiction takes a huge toll on the addict’s loved ones, and we are worn out waiting for a phone call that our daughter fatally overdosed.
Best wishes for addicts seeking help as well as their family and friends.

Once she is off of insurance she can get on Medicaid which will surprisingly pay for atleast 30-45 days of decent treatment a few surprisingly good facilities.
Northeast Louisiana has 3 different facilities that take Medicaid that I would be comfortable sending a loved one to

We just got the call that our 17 year old son has a bed available later this month. In OT comedic fashion he’s only into weed and alcohol. But he has a mental health diagnosis that makes him a rule breaker and he’s very curious about all drugs. For his personality, weed really is a gateway drug. His dad and I did plenty of partying in college but luckily neither of us have addictive personalities. Unfortunately our son does. His whole life, everything he’s developed an interest in has become an obsession. And now our gifted, highly intelligent boy has turned into a teen that thinks his life purpose is to get high and skip school. He tests into honors classes but is failing his junior year and has been hospitalized twice already this year for depression. But he genuinely doesn’t see the connection between the marijuana use and his depression. We’re exhausted.

I got drug into the middle of that circle more than once. Even worse with Jerry sitting right next to him.
Me: “I’m not lying!”
Darren: “really Mr Supadave, as he pulls out a piece of paper from his pocket while snapping his chewing gum. Hahaha”

No kidding. I was reminiscing about FCCs with Darren and Greg earlier today. Fun times.

As someone else mentioned, this thread is a great dose of perspective for those of us not pulled, or at least in our minds not pulled, to this side of the extreme. I'm a social drinker and an evening wind down drinker. Have maybe had 2 or 3 nights in my life where booze led to losing complete control having started drinking at 16. Reading some of this scares the shite out of me.

It could how chooses to cope with his depression, and not the cause.

It's 2021. There are a bunch of cannabis industry jobs that require a college degree. Being it cultivation or doing cannabinoid extractions. I'm not telling you to encourage your kid to get high, but don't rule out using getting an education to get a career in the cannabis industry as motivation. I know it sounds counterintuitive, but things aren't like when we were teens.
