no, i'm not...but i have been dealing with clinical depression for decades and have read as much as i can about it to try to deal with my own issues...i was first diagnosed when i was 9 years old...i was put on thorazine and valium (ridiculous meds for a child)...i took SSRIs for several years as an adult, and they did nothing for me...my psychiatrist told me that SSRIs do very little if anything for people with trauma based depression and anxiety...if the meds make some people feel better, then that's great, but that was not my experience at all, nor is it the experience of a large number of people...and the side effects are not worth it for many people as well...also, it's estimated that only about 50% of people report positive effects from SSRIs, regardless of the source of the depression...

My dad was raised in Jena. Actually found a nice looking property there last week. I'm still holding out for TX property but did consider how cool it'd be to end up where he began.

Thanks for the reply. It was an honest curiosity. I'm always wary of meds but I do know folks who have been helped by them (placebo or otherwise.)

You're right about that.

you're welcome! i certainly didn't mean to denigrate anyone who is helped by meds, if that's the way my post came across...i've just talked to a lot of people whose depression was compounded when meds didn't work, because they (and myself) felt like it was their fault that the meds failed...that is a miserable feeling...and i would encourage people who have tried meds with no luck not to give up...there have been a lot of great suggestions in this thread...

Great advice but I am also a born again believer and I can attest sometimes it’s not that simple.

I believe Paul was also depressed. He was “sorrowful even unto death”

Medicine and talking to someone is not a fix-all but it’s a start. Be honest or your treatment won’t go well.

I have recently heard of the massive effect of a lack of Vitamin D and Magnesium and plan to supplement my treatment.

Run from medicine! Acceptance and Commitment Therapy or a good diet/workout routine would go a long way. Having said that, getting into your Bible is by far the best thing we currently have to deal with stuff like that.

I'm near Jena. Best friend is that way. Great small community. Everything you'd need.

Honestly, what has helped me is knowing I'm never alone. I received the free gift Jesus offers every one of us. What a Daddy we have.

I take celexa everyday. Helped me out quite a bit.. I get down at times but it keeps me from going apeshit. Talk to your doctor though. Describe how you are feeling and what’s going on. There are different meds that work for different people.

Be grateful to God for all of your blessings and avoid focusing on the worldly things that are only on loan to you for this journey anyway.

Yes with psychiatrist to prescribe medicine. Sometimes difficult to find the right medicine. It can get rough. Don’t let anyone prescribe a whole cocktail of pills!
And you should also see a counselor for talk therapy. Sometimes starts with multi visits per week to give you a push and then goes to once a week or every other week.
It’s a rough road but you’ve got to hang in there and keep pushing. And it takes time, but there will be light and hope coming for you. God Bless and Good Luck.
