Anyone at Northwestern When Jim Croce's Plane Crashed?

In 1973, singer Jim Croce was killed in a plane crash in Natchitoches. He had played at Northwestern and was on his way to Austin College in Sherman, Texas. I learned last night that my Uncle attended Austin College at the time and had planned on going to the show.
Out of curiosity, anyone here attend Croce's last performance at Northwestern?

Doubt many on the OT know who Jim Croce is much less that he died in Louisiana.
Didn't his pilots basically crash the plane because they were coked up?

No - but I know the guy that drove him to his plane. An NSU student at the time - he would later be my father's assistant manager when Pops Midnight ran the infamous Lighthouse Club in Alexandria, Louisiana from 1976 to 1980.

The NTSB report said that the pilot was overweight with cardio problems and possibly vision problems. He flew into a single tree that easily could have been avoided by moving the plane right or left.

I celebrate the man's entire catalog... "Operator" is the song most people know, but Roller Derby Queen, and I've Got a Name were the best two songs on that album.

I may be thinking about the pilots of the Lynyrd Skynyrd crash then.

One of the few musicians you can put on and listen to every song in his collection.

Totally agree. I'm only 32, but I still remember the first time my mom played his record for me when I was about 10. Naturally, she played Operator...
I was instantly hooked and she just let the whole thing play.

As a matter of fact, they were talking about his death, and I was like, "Who is Jim Croce?".

What would you do if you could save time in a bottle?

I've got to call myself out... I think those are all on his greatest hits, not the same original album.

Its actually strange how many muscian plane crashes were either headed to, or from Louisiana. .. the day the music died, Skynard, Croce off the top of my head, and there's a few more I can't remember.

I've Got a Name is one of my favorite songs. Croce made timeless music imo.

After the crash we called him Jim Crashe. Had a friend whose brother worked at the airport at NSU. They have a aviation program there. He said befor the NTSB arrived, the pilots seats were gone and my friend said they were at some Frats around campus. Twenty some odd years later when I was in the restaurant business one of my liquor salesmen was the president of the student council/govt at that time. Croce was suppose to perform earlier but was sick and had to cancel. He promised he would return and do the show and dead, I mean did. The story was on pbs once I believe.

Car Wash Blues
"Well, I had just got out from the county prison
Doin ninety days for non-support
Tried to find me an executive position
But no matter how smooth I talked
They wouldnt listen to the fact that I was a genius
The man say, we got all that we can use."
The man was a great song writer.

might be confusing him with the rumors about Ricky Nelson's crash on the way to a New Years Eve gig in Dallas
BTW: I was in the Bengal having a cold one when Skynnyrd crashed on the way to BR, with four tickets in my pocket to the show that night, still have the tix
