I was about to post Stevie Ray Vaughn crash info, as I recall it being right before Jazz Fest in 1990, but the crash occurred far away from LA, per Wiki.

RIP SRV.

Not sure about the pilot. Monroe newspaper only mentioned toxicology reports indicated that a couple of the occupants tested positive. My take was that the pilot was probably exhausted, it was dark, and he did not see the tree and did not have enough loft to get above it.

it was a tragedy, the NTSB terms it CFLIT, which means controlled flight into terrain, but in this case CFLI-Tree

regarding SRV, there were a few of us in my group who were avid musicians, and it was a very big thing when SRV went down. I recall a distinct call for a moment of silence from one of our guys on that fateful night, and the non-musicians were profoundly reverent. SRV was that good in his time.

yes he was, I was in a band(with the guy who called me,) and he was was/is a huge SRV aficionado, I've known him for over 30 years, and that was one of three times that I had known of him to be shaken up

not funny then, but years later, after I moved away, I told him it took me a year or two before I wouldn't automatically change the channel when an SRV song wold come on, because we played so much of it, I was sick of it

Yup. Ever heard of the song Six Strings Down by SRV's brother, Jimmie? "Alpine Valley...middle of the night. Six strings down...on a heaven-bound flight."

I'll link in a sec. Clapton, BB King, and a bunch of others play on it. Pretty good tribute.

Here's the live performance

quote:

Jimmie Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Robert Cray, B.B.King, Buddy Guy, Dr.John, Art Neville and Double Trouble

Easier back then, some docs would write them if you were vertical.

My Dad taught at NSU and I was a kid so these were the rumors going around town:

1. They (the band) were at a Hotel in Natchitoches and the police got called the result of which the band left that night not early in the morning.

2. The pilot was confused and took off from the taxi way not the runway and hit the trees at about 10 ft off the ground.

No idea if any of that is factual but those were the rumors at Warren Easton Elementary!
