That's true of Federal DOT and USCG physicals too now. Docs have more diagnostic tools and the science and scope of physicals has changed. The '98 Mother's Day bus crash in NOLA was a watershed event in operator medical inspection for all disciplines in the US. Things have changed....

I thought they were leaving the pananlde, Tx when they crashed. Also, I thought I heard it was a young Waylon Jennings who gave up his seat for Valens, no?

Link to NSU Current Sauce (student newspaper). Link opens to article on the day of the concert, with the article (Sep 25 issue) about the crash four pages later.
NSU Current Sauce Sep 18, 1973
Somewhere a former student has a last pic of comedian George Stevens, a George Carlin wannabe who also died, stopping in mid act to pose with his finger up his nose.

Doubt many on the OT know who Jim Croce is much less that he died in Louisiana.

Agree 100%. FYI I'm 38 and know who he is. Thank God for parents who shared their music with me growing up.

yeah, he was going from WI(Alpine Valley?,) back to Chicago, he was supposed to be on a bus, but felt sick, and took the chopper instead,
All the acts were supposed to take helicopters to beat the traffic back to Chicago.
Stevie Ray wasn't feeling sick. He was in great spirits. He was talking to Chris Layton right before he went to get on the copter and told him he wanted to get back to call his girlfriend Janna.

No, but one day I will own one of the 73 Martin D-21s with his signature and a 1973 dime in the 3rd fret

Camden, TN - about 90 miles from Nashville.

don't do it for the sig, it's not his, or the dime, he let the operator keep it

Oh, ok I knew she crashed just didn't know where. I don't know if you saw my earlier post but when you mentioned the Lighthouse it brought back memories.

People don't believe me when I tell them I was never in the place during business hours - of course I was 10/12ish when Pops was the manager.

Guidelines for FAA medical exams.
LINK
The only medical test required today for the FAA 1st medical certificate is a EKG after age 35, age 40 for 2nd and 3rd class. Otherwise is a simple physical, you can pass with a blood pressure of 155/90, which would cause most docs to put a patient on medication.

for 1st class(good for 6 mos.,) it's an EKG(dat linked straight to the fuz in OKC, every other time after 40, wasn't a req. back then)

that's about as lenient as it gets, almost all other parameters, these days are a little more strict than for "normal" people
ETA: now if you have your own civilian Doc in your pocket(and that's the way to go,) it's a different story

anybody know if there is anything marking the crash site? I used to live a few hundred yards from the airport.

Of this, I am aware. I just have a particular fondness of the guy and most of his works, and the sound he (and his counterpart) got out of a guitar. I've been meaning to find the time to get into AJ Croce (his son)'s stuff. I've only heard a few of his songs. They're pretty good. Anyone reading this, if that hasn't been mentioned already, should check it out.
Also, I think his best songs were either "I'll have to say I love you in a song" or "New York's Not My Home"

I hear you, those two really were good guitar players, and even though I'm bent a little more to the rock side, I love to listen to the albums, yep still have a turntable. Love to listen to the guitar work on James Taylor stuff too. Don't see anymore of these type of talents coming before I check out.
