I usually use a safety razor, Mercur and feather blade, but when I want to get real close I’ll go with a Gillette Fusion, but damn they’re expensive. Was wondering if anyone can give me some comparisons of Harry’s, or Dollar Shave Club to that of the Gillette blades,or if there’s another group I should consider. Much appreciated.

Doesn’t a safety razor with proper lather give a closer shave than fusion?

I didn’t like the shavers but I am picky as hell. They don’t suck I just liked my Gillette power better

Yes and no. Way more room to be aggressive with a fusion.

Dollar Shave club and Defender razors don’t get nearly as close and Gillette

It’s close, but it take a lot more passes, and when trying to get real close, the more passes the more irritation I find than I get with Gillette. It’s when I go up to get it real close that I get more irritation when using safety razor.

I’m actually thinking of switching to an actual, old school straight razor

The learning curve is tough and it’s risky and slow, but the closeness of the shave is unparalleled

If used skillfully, it should.

It does for me. I ordered 100 gillete/wilkenson sword blades off of ebay for around 5 bucks a few years back. I normally have a beard but the safety razor is the only thing that doesn't burn me.

I find Harry's to be a very good value for the price.

NO and not really close. I have used both for a very long time. A afety razor needs three passes to get close to a Fusion.

yes, I use the same set up as the OP and have never found a closer shave than my safety razor.

I think it depends upon your skin. I don’t have issue one on my face regardless of direction, it’s when I go against the grain on my neck it’s very sensitive and leaves bumps while Gillette just doesn’t. It gets close with a safety razor, but my neck just pays the price for it.

I bought a Viking safety razor a few years ago and a shite ton of cheap blades from Japan.
Best decision I ever made, does exactly what I need.

The Merkur 34C is not an aggressive razor. A more aggressive safety razor would help.

Secondly, do a 3 pass shave. With the grain, across the grain, against the grain. I do 3 passes routinely and get closer than I ever did with a cartridge.

Yes it takes longer and is more work, but worth it to me. I spend $8 for 100 razor blades that will last me a couple years. Try that with Gillette.

I use DSC. I think I'm in the executive (whatever their best razor is). Been pretty happy in the 2+ years I've used it. Got it for my dad as a gift and he likes it as well.

I guess I use razors much longer than the average person because I had a stack of extras when I was getting them every month. Now I get a pack of 4 razors every other month and it seems to be working pretty well.

FYI, I don't shave everyday and don't mind some scruff. I probably shave 2-3 times a week.
