I live in the same town as the Warmbiers and know the family casually. They are good people and Otto was a smart kid. I doubt he would try to steal a poster in the middle of the night. My guess is that someone else took it, and they took advantage of some US citizens being onsite to set them up. Definitely did not deserve the treatment he experienced.

wtf were his parents thinking allowing him to make this trip?

As I recall they didn't. He was in China as an exchange student and signed up for a trip to NK on his own.

I had an uncle who visited North Korea in 1950. He said the people there were rude, shooting at you and shite. Then he said a bunch of even ruder Chinese tourists showed up that October and he decided to head back into South Korea. Overall experience on the Korean Peninsula: 1/5. Did not recommend.

I lived in a rural coastal part of Japan and it was a running joke to stay off the beaches at night or the North Koreans would kidnap you, take you back and turn you into a foreign language teacher slave. Japanese parents actually tell their kids this.

I'm almost positive North Korea has actually admitted to doing this.

Those people in shacks are closely monitored by the government via boots on the ground according to an independent journalist. Every person he came across in the country was saying nothing but great things about the Supreme leader even though the reporter was showing how awful their living conditions were, and this was on a beach where I would assume is easier to say what is really going on. Then the govt official would step in and redirect the reporter. They all know that if they step the slightest bit out of line they are gone.
