In Louisiana, it is now illegal to use a handheld cell phone while driving, unless it is for hands-free calls or navigation. This law expands on previous restrictions in school and construction zones and makes handheld phone use illegal everywhere in the state. Violations can result in a $100 fine, or $250 in school or construction zones, but a five-month grace period is in effect, during which warnings will be issued instead of tickets

Screw every person who text and drives, and it's a massive number. That's right under being shite faced and driving.

Isn't it a secondary offense? I don't think they can pull you over for it unless you're also screwing something else up (the reasons are infinite).

Exactly this is the issue....you can do so without worry as long as you don't speed or swerve or something else that would give then legal reason to actually stop you. You can be holding it up and talking and they cannot pull you over. It's a toothless law meant to add additional charges if they can get you for something other than being impaired via digital device

I got pulled over for looking down. phone was in my pocket. I was digging for change at a red light.

Who looks at their phone when you have carplay and android auto?

They won't even pull you over if you're driving a 100 and shooting out the window.

We just check inspection stickers now.

Its s law that gives them probable cause to stop you, just like with seatbelts. Cop just has to say i stopped you because you were on your phone and swerving. Etc.

However, police won’t be pulling people over just for holding a phone. Louisiana State Police Public Information Officer Jacob Pucheu explained during an interview on WWL Radio that this is a secondary offense, meaning it can only be cited if you're pulled over for another traffic violation.

I don’t even use my phone while driving and it pisses me off while I’m at a red light and the person isn’t even paying attention because the phone is stuck to their ear..

is sitting thru a red light a violation? Or constantly changing speeds on the interstate as you text or look at the socials?

As noted, effective Jan. 1 the penalties & degree of enforcement will change. No set fine amount has been issued yet but it will be more than the $100 or slap on the wrist fine in effect till then. Use in construction or school zones will remain more costlier & enforced stronger. With school just starting, look for more & more LEO's around school zones as they usually are this time of year.

So Terrebonne parish bridges are all fricked up. Yesterday they had three accidents in the tunnel which caused 1-1/2 hour commute times to go 10 miles.

The parish president posted a video while addressing the traffic situation. He’s clearly driving while filming himself. It didn’t go unnoticed.
