Son wants to buy his second car, trading up from basic pickup. He's looking for a certain generation of Audi S4 (B6).

KBB and other online guides are not much help with cars like this, especially since there is a watershed issue with the timing chains. (Original builds skimped on tensioner/guide materials, and things go badly. Once this is fixed, engines seem to be bulletproof. The fix is like $8-10Km though, so used values are pretty much "Has or Has Not").

Anyway, just wondering if anyone here lives in that world and can help me guide him on this. I can't post in Audizine because he will know I am checking up on him.

TIA

You want me to post on Audizine so he'll know you're checking up on him through me?

Look on bringatrailer.com and you will get some good info and values.

They aren't cheap.

If you find one that has been fixed, it’s worth about 7 grand in good condition and 80k miles.

Good look finding one.

Even then, I wonder if it will send up a red flag to him if he sees it. He is of that mindset where "I HAVE to get this" and old man trying to guide the 19 year old through smart decision making has to tread carefully.

This is the car.

I've been told the blue color and blue seats are "rare", plus the other work he has done adds to the value. I have no feel for this, but am dubious.

From the ad

That's quite a range. Super Car or a Jeep.

that is a 14 year old German car. If your son was in the position to have this as a weekend toy and not have to rely on it for everyday transortation, go for it. I just wouldn't want to have that as my only vehicle with a limited budget and time for repairs that WILL arise.

I have an 05 4.2 v8. It's the later models that audi did away with the timing belts that have problems if I recall correctly.

I'm the parent that steps in sometimes to make a point, but does not hover over him. I want him to make his own decisions, but I am the cover over gutters as he rolls down the lane. I don't micromanage, but I do keep an eye out for landmines he won't see at 19 years old.

The kid is an Eagle Scout, speaks French, just finished a gap year assignment in Africa on the Mercy Ship, and is headed off to college in the spring.

You parent your way. I'll parent mine.

This is a classic and rare collector car that will compete with Subaru WRX, S4, BMW M3, Audi S-line, Porsche, Maserati, Ferrari, Lamborghini, and anything else ...except for maybe the quiet and no fun Tesla (ha)

For real player?

Also, that's the most exhaustive list of repairs I've seen on a car in a long time. Knowing that all that needed to be done and all the other shite that can go wrong...no thanks.

That gen Audi’s are some of the worst reliability wise and that’s saying a lot seeing how it’s an Audi. Tell him to get an e46 m3 will be a future collectible.

I used to have a B6 A4. It was a good car but maintenance started to become a real hassle. Luckily got rid of it before the timing belt went.

I have and will.

Careful with the crowing sport, you're fond of quoting the Bible here:

"Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall."

I never brag about my kids, I guess just that's the way my parents raised me.

My parents parented one way and obviously your parents raised you a different way.

I love Nagoro blue but I hate the seats. I think you can still get the color on a new Audi as a paint to sample color, but it’s more purple.

Anyway, those V8 have carbon buildup problems. I thought they all had timing chain issues, but someone earlier said that year didn’t, so I’ll assume that’s true. Those aren’t cheap, DIY fixes.

In that price range, I’d go e36 all day. $30k, id go RS4.

Post on Audizine with a screenname like "CreampieMyButt", so his son will raise eyebrows about his dad..
