I am seriously considering buying a "summer house" in a cooler, mountainous climate as I ease into retirement in about 10 years. It really depends on where my kids are living, but I'm thinking Colorado or Tennessee/NC/Ga.

I'd stay in La. during football season and the winter.

Any of you done something like this? Is it unsustainable from a tax standpoint? Not sure about renting a house out on VRBO, because ideally I would want to be in the house during the vacation months.

Does CO have high property taxes?

No, everyone on the OT owns way more than 2.

Do Montana instead. Much better!

I want to do the same. Been looking at CO. Keep me updated on what you do. I want to hunt/fly fish. Denver is such a great hub to fly.

ETA

Also been looking at N NM.

I’ve never sold a house. Just keep them as rentals when I move on. I have my current residence and have three other houses I’m letting renters buy for me.

Yeah i would recommend it. My place in Vail is wonderful during the fall right before the first snowfall. Winter time is crowded around the holidays but you should definitely do it if you can swing it.

I am not there yet, but am saving up to buy a duplex to rent out at some point. Hoping within the next 4-5 years. If I did not do that, I would buy a new house and rent my current one out. It is a decent house in a decent neighborhood (starter home, 1,800 square feet).

I have a vacation home or whatever you want to call it... second home whatever. It is seriously only 45 minutes away from me and could be an easy commute, but it's more of a nice fishing cabin than anything. It is nice enough to live in full time, but it isn't nearly as nice as our regular home. Hell I just looked at it like it was a couple of new F250s... back in 2012 when I bought it anyway. I'll just drive my old Dodge for a few more years until it is paid for.

My neighbors do this.

They live in LA during late to spring and then go to their farmhouse in Wisconsin when it gets above 85 down here.

They will come back down when it get below freezing up there.

I take care of their house when they are gone during the summer. They pay me with fresh apples and pears from their orchard.

Easily doable if you find one that you can get some serious rental income from.

Lots of millennials already have two houses - their parents' house and the tree house out back.

Colorado has high everything. Ok, now that’s out of the way, yes, in some areas property taxes can be expensive. We own a house in a Golden, a 1902 bungalow, 2000 sq ft and pay $3400/year.

We own a house in the Keys and pay a bit more for a small house. This is our “we are tired of this shite” in the winter get away. We used to rent by the month when we weren’t there but the house just got too ragged out by people who don’t give two shits about your property.

I currently have one house in one location and two lots in another location. About to build on one of the lots, and planning to sell the other one and the house.

I do but not by choice right now.

We have a house and my wife's family owns residential rentals and 1 commercial rental in Los Angeles county about 15 min walk from the beach. I have a small farm in southern Oklahoma.

The plan is to sell all of that shite within 2 years along with a very large acreage in Texas that my wife has a stake in and be done with it. One house and one place to live. Vacation from there but I am worn ragged trying to manage all of this shite.

This. I've spent 3 yrs in Billings, for work, and it was beautiful. There's a town, 45 minutes south of Billings, called Red Lodge that has a ski resort and the Beartooth Mountains. Great hunting and fishing and the people are great.

You can buy a vacation house relatively cheap around the smokey mountains and be able lease it when you're not spending time there.

So for some of the prettiest weather of the year for the Smoky Mountain area you will choose to live in Louisiana.
