My longest drive is 37 miles each way with toll roads, 50 miles without toll roads. I don't have to do it every day. Only about 3 times a week. Other days it's only a 25 mile drive. I've got a diesel car so gas costs aren't that bad. And I can sneak out at about 3:30-4:00, so I get home at 5 no matter what. I only got a 15% raise, and I actually re-located and chose to live where I live. It's totally worth it, as I love where I live and couldn't afford to live closer anyway

I drove 292 miles on Monday and will probably be over 100 again today. I enjoy it.

used to drive 50+ miles one way from Burnside to Hammond everyday... liked the people and place i worked at, but the drive sucked... couple of "dozed off" moments along the way too... and no, i wouldn't do it again, unless i absolutely HAD to, kinda like at the time i took the job....

around 140 miles round trip daily. Job is good, drive is good. Never really mind the drive, but it doesn't help your desire to travel on the weekends.

I drive 60-200 miles a day depending on meetings and site visits. I find driving relaxing though....

yep this is me. I dont have to punch a clock, I pretty much come and go as I please. Company pays for truck and fuel. I'm still able to get shite done during the drive. Some days I dont make it in the the office, but Im still on the road meeting with people.

Like daily? How long did it take before you started hating your job due to that? Is it worth a 40% pay bump to take a job requiring that (assuming you won't relocate closer to said job)?

There's a lot more that should go into your decision, but for me, a 40% pay bump would get my attention. not sure I would do it but I'd be willing to listen.

Used to drive 60 miles round trip 5 days a week. Now I have a 5 minute walk. My life is 100x better. Long commutes are terrible in every way. Seems to be common in Louisiana based on what I've read on this board though. Can't imagine it anymore.

Nailed it. 2 hour daily drive back and forth to work. Will do this until the day I die.

40% of what you make? Not so sure about that.

I hear you. I used to have an hour+ commute one way. Now it's down to 30 minutes and The affect it has had on my state of mind can't be exaggerated.

Having said that, 40% is hard to not look into. I'd have to think about it at least, but at most, Id work the job just long enough to pay off student loans and sock a little away for the kids educations (max 4 years) then I'd look for an exit. Couldn't do it longer than that.

I drive from Bay St. Louis, MS to Mandeville every day for work and love it. 45 minutes, no traffic

I used to do it.

It isnt as bad as it seems.

Sort of just becomes a routine.

I did it for a 100% pay increase doe.

If I kept the same benefits I'd probably do it, especially if there was an end in sight and the job was a stepping stone to a bigger goal.

If you made $50K a year before, a 40% pay increase means you will make $70K now. That's a big jump. Definitely worth the drive.

$20k after taxes and benefits is closer to 12-13 I'd say. Factor in cutting your cars lifetime in half and maintenance cost increasing allow 200-300 a month incremental expense/depreciation and another 150 in gas. That's about $7k of added expense making your net raise $5-6k, or 135 bucks a pay period. Is that worth driving at least 2hrs a day versus 1, while also losing the flexibility of being nearby home for errands and unplanables? Break even point isn't so sexy then.
