It honestly has zero effect on my day to day life. The technology advancing is great and all but a picture of a black hole isnt going to make my day any easier

I can understand... I've been guilty of the same attitude in other areas. There were no doubt a bunch of ol' boys making fun and hootin' at some fellows who told them something called 'lectrical could go through wires and would change society in ways the couldn't imagine...what's going on the the quantum world right now makes that discovery and harnessing of electricity look like circus monkeys.. ... it's cool to laugh at it but it's even cooler if you learn about what's going on and how it will effect what you may actually think is reality.

I mean seriously what’s the point? Because they are curious? Do they plan to stop this black hole from one day gobbling up our galaxy? Will they solve all the worlds humanitarian problems studying pictures of a what looks like a backlit anus?
I would prefer if they could tell me at least within an hour of when it will rain. Or maybe spend a little more of your physics knowledge on something that actually make life on earth a little better. I am all for space exploration. Maybe cancer curing medicines need low gravity, no oxygen atomospheres in order to be developed

Without going too deep the study of black holes is expected to help refine our understanding of special relativity and quantum gravity/mechanics. The more we understand the very basics of how physics work the more amazing inventions and processes we develop. These are the type of things that lead to paradigm shifts in how we lead our everyday lives.
