Nah that shite’s retarded. Just pitch a regular tent on the ground.

I tend to get in less trouble in my Subaru tent than just putting up a regular tent in various parking garages

Never saw the appeal. Climbing, parking on a level spot, etc.
That Subaru is pretty sweet though.

I guess the fun starts when a storm rolls in

Thats a pretty cool setup although I wouldn't purchase an entire vehicle for that specific purpose.

Also not my pic but I have a roll out canopy type thing on my 4runner similar to this that we use quite a bit.

roof top tent is a terrible use of space. get something like an ARB awning you can attach a 'room' to, it packs up very small and leaves your roof rack free for a Thule or other case to place items in. Plus you can stand up in it, which you can't do in a RTT. You can easily take a piss in the middle of the night and so on. Also, the doors on that thing can be lined up with your vehicle doors, so if you need to access something in your vehicle, it's very easy.

I had one of the cantilevered RTT’s on my Frontier a few years ago.
Thought it would work a lot better for me than it did. When I was looking to buy one, I had grand plans of using it while kayak fishing to save on renting camps and to start taking camping trips with my son.
Ultimately though, it was kind of a PITA to pack up when it was time to hit the road. And if you ever wanted to go anywhere, you had to pack it up. Having a RTT on a trailer that I could have unhitched would have been a better setup, or one of the hardshell tents that open/close quickly.
I have a Subaru Outback now and if I try a RTT again, it will be a James baroud or magg hardshell

It's pretty popular in the midwest and northwest - all the yuppies getting their kicks "camping" in a park while driving to Yellowstone. The vans converted into mini rv's are pretty popular too, I've seen a bunch of those on i80 and i90 this year.

When I was up in Montana, I lived in my truck for awhile. I had a shell on the bed. Inside, I had a sleeping bag on a mattress with my clothes on the side and blankets on top of me. This was in late April and early May. I would wake up with 2-3 inches of snow on my truck. I lived in a truck DOWN by the RIVER.
