Again, go be the owner of your own business. And until you do, put all those concerns and complaints on a list,,,,,that’s the list of things you can control when your the boss,,,until then, you probably are going to be unhappy working for someone.

Counter-counterpoint: What is the cost of lawsuits due to drivers killing a family while texting and driving versus cost of lost revenue because office jockeys are dicking off on the internet all day?

Based on the number of posts here (and social media in general) during the day I would bet that one is much higher than the other.

That’s a silly comparison.

1) The correct comparison would be between one “office jockey” and one driver.

2) I don’t which has a higher average cost (the average office worker’s nonproductive time vs. the average driver’s incident costs), but I’m fairly confident that most companies take the risk of vehicle accidents much more seriously. Especially when you start talking about drivers who drive on customer property / deliver to customer locations.

3) Do you really think office workers’ productivity isn’t being monitored? You don’t think companies have data on what websites employees are visiting, how they’re using their time throughout the workday, etc.?

The amount of mental gymnastics you just performed to essentially say “I believe other people should be recorded but not me” is impressive.

If you think the homeowners insurance market in Louisiana is in crisis mode, the commercial auto market is even worse. Only way a lot of companies can get insurance is if they install in/out facing cameras and trackers.

A society where corporations have unquestionable control over their workers is almost as bad as socialism.

“Unquestionable control over their workers”? You serious clarke?

You’re being melodramatic. We are talking about people driving company vehicles, on company time, with company logos in many (if not most) cases.

The types of company vehicles I see with dash cams are not typically “perk” vehicles that someone is using to commute to an office. They’re normally larger trucks or vans that are hauling deliveries, tools, equipment, or personnel to and from customer locations. And “personal use” of these vehicles is often prohibited - largely because they’re mobile billboards that say “sue me!”

If you’re driving a box truck, flatbed, tow truck, etc. for work, then driving safely is quite literally one of your primary job duties. It’s a little silly to think companies shouldn’t monitor your performance of that job when the tools exist to do so. It’s no different than being supervised on a manufacturing line, or by a foreman on a construction crew. It’s a blue collar job like any other, and this idea of driving being some sort of sacred private time is precisely why companies feel the need to monitor it in the first place - because for some reason, people consistently show different driving behaviors when they’re being monitored.

We’ve had them on drilling rigs for close to 20 years watching the rig operator and all the people working on the rig floor. They only pull the footage if something unplanned happens.

Solved many an RCA because of them. Funny how witness statements never seem to match what actually happened.

One of the better options. Unless you have a micro-manager prick who has time to spend all day pulling cams that have a significant delay I wouldn’t worry about it. Also if anyone does that they’re going to get bent over on data over usage real quick. The AI monitoring on those is pretty good and the reporting it better than the old gps only units that couldn’t distinguish abusive hard braking from slamming on the brakes because someone cut you off. The one pilot I did with them we actually set the driver scoring to where rather than starting at 100 and only getting negative movement, we started at 100 but it could go up or down if drivers got positive scoring. We setup a bonus program and everything for the better drivers. It’s solid technology.

ETA. Also the default Lytx setting is to alert the driver to non-conformance and allow remedy before dinging the score.

They are about to do this bullshite with us too. It's time for a career change. fricking horseshite micromanaging nonsense.

ETA the bigger steaming pile of horseshite is that they promised us substantial raises were coming at thanksgiving. Then walked it back to Before Christmas

Now? fricking nothing. "Will be looked at 1st quarter."

I've put up with their corporate crap long enough. It's all fricking stick and no carrot.

They spend all this money on bullshite like these cameras but can't even pay us what we're worth.

I'm the fricking fool for sticking with them this long.

he inward facing cams are solely to find a reason to fire someone for dubious reasons. "Oh, he took his safety glasses off for a second to remove his hoodie while the window was open! Investigation!" (I know a guy that got fired for this.) Locomotives have had black boxes for decades that are randomly downloaded and always downloaded after an incident. They know exactly what the engineer was doing at all times. No need for a cam in your face watching your every move.

I work for CSX and they just pulled a man out of service for smoking. A random download saw it and the MTO pulled him out last Friday. We have cameras in all crew rooms and all over the yard(Nashville). A man can not take a piss anywhere outside with out being watched

Most trucking companies have them now thanks to the insurance companies. Only a matter of time before my job puts one in and I immediately quit. Not going to have a camera in the truck which doubles as my home on the road. Outward facing, go ahead. Inward? Not driving one.
I have my own dashcam as does most of my co-workers, only a matter of time before bosses push for mandatory cameras.

Employers are using them to watch their employees.

Who do you think has the time to watch all this footage? I'm an employer that has a camera and its because I should have fired my employee 3 months ago for continuing to smoke in the vehicle among other things, none of which are terrible. The only way I can watch it is if I'm close enough to the camera to bluetooth download it, which is almost never.

For the vast majority of good employees if you don't act a fool normally you'll never get caught.

We have them in our vehicles. I’ll give a few pointers on how to stay out of trouble with it:

- don’t speed
-wear your seatbelt
- keep your phone in your pocket no matter what
- drive slow enough to avoid all hard braking (that is what triggers them)

I had to fire an employee recently because of repeated drive-cam offenses. Follow the steps above and you will have no problem.
