been there done that when my dog was at LSU. Funny how noticeable a pet's absence can be.

My dog , Blake , was just fine and his usual energetic self just 6 days ago. Here we are now at the Emergency Vet because he couldn't keep his eyes open and would not move , not even stand up. He 12 yrs old

Someone once said on here that when your pet stops being a pet and becomes a patient, it is time.

Sucks. I know. Had to put 2 of my best friends down a couple of years ago. And getting closer every day with my 12 year old, although she is completely healthy at this point.

Just make sure your dog is comfortable and not in pain. You'll know when it is time.

Let him go. It is a tough call to make, but think about his happiness. He can't move or keep his eyes open. when he does I bet he looks at you like "Please, put me out of my misery". my wife and I have been through this a few times and it is never easy. But when a dog can't move you are doing him a disservice by keeping him around because it hurts to say goodbye. Sit with him through the process and be sure to say "Thank You for being such a wonderful part of our lives" before he is gone.
After you've had time to mourn, get another dog. It will do you wonders.

Remember All Dogs Go to Heaven.

Good Luck with whatever you decide on.

Hope you find some comfort in whatever decision you make. I know it is one of the hardest things you'll have to do to put him down, but time will help you heal.
Good luck with the second opinion.

did the vet diagnose it as cancer?

yes...it's certainly possible that the dog can take a turn for the worse in less than a week if it is cancer. remember, they can't tell you that they've been weak or sick by facial expressions or voice.

it's probable that he's been sick for a long time and it's finally at the end. always "love loosely" when it comes to dogs/pets. they will eventually break your heart.

What did the vet say was wrong?? If it's something terminal don't let him suffer. But it could something easily reversible like a tick or something he ate. I think someone else mentioned a pinched nerve. There are many possible acute issues that would cause these symptoms. If your vet didn't give you an explanation, go to another vet.

I'm a few days behind here but my parents' dog had similar symptoms - lethargy, didn't move, etc. turns out he had eaten a dead frog or something outside and the vet said his blood was basically turning to jello. His symptoms came on in about a day or two but he was really small, like 8 lbs. Vet gave him some meds and kept him for a few days and he was fine in the end, so good luck with whatever it is.
