Any Respiratory Therapist here?

If so, what’s it like? Have a step daughter thinking about pursuing respiratory therapy
Starting pay? Daily job routine? Hospital or private practice? Can you travel?
Thanks in advance

Used to bang a chick in NOLA who is one.
She makes good money for hardly doing much from what little I heard.

You can make more as a nurse

Tell her to go into nursing. More opportunities to expand career after becoming an RN. Booming job market right now. More pay and more skills. I know many respiratory therapists who went back to school to become nurses. Don't know of many nurses that went back to become respiratory therapists. Just a thought.

A friend of ours has a daughter that is a respiratory therapist and she has done well enough to purchase a lot and build a 2 story, 4 BR, 2.5 Bath house in the 2500+ sq. ft. range in Lakeview.
I don't know what her salary is, but that was a huge chunk of change for the build and driving a new SUV to boot. She did this when single, but now married with no kids.

Or took on a load of debt, or inherited it, or hit it big in the stock market. Really doubt all of that was strictly based off of a RT salary unless she was a RT for 40 years saving every penny she made
Just because someone has nice things doesn't mean they are rich or that their job pays a hefty salary

Especially since RTs make only like 50-60k a year.

I am, and I make more than that but have been doing it close to 30 years...
It’s not a bad field, you can make good money, but like someone said, you have more opportunities in nursing.
I didn’t want to become an RN because I didn’t want to clean shite and change diapers which you have to do to expand your career.
I’m to the point where I’m making good money as a staff registered therapist. No more charge or administrative bull shite.. Do my job, take care of pt’s, go home.. Hell, I make more than my director..

Not if you work somewhere that has good CNAs or in surgery or an ambulatory clinic. All about where you choose to work

You do realize to become a CRNA you need 2 years of ICU experience right..?
You’ll be cleaning shite for those 2 years...
And CNA is a nursing assistant , you mean CRNA..

Radiological technologist is a similar option.
I see the respiratory techs managing airways, and always suctioning, makes me gag.

Some of the RNs where I work had previously been respiratory therapists, so I assume RN is a better option.

Well it’s not for everyone that’s for sure, like cleaning shite is not for me. Most RNs hate dealing with trachs and sputum. It’s just part of the job to me now. Like a mechanic changing oil..

I would not recommend any family member to be a nurse. Nurses are abused by other staff members, doctors, patients and violence in the work place is common. Nurses now have to do everything from mopping the floor, cleaning patients up without help, EKG, and draw their own patients blood. Their patient load is very high with a large number patients. I would either go to Respiratory school or Radiology Tech but not be a nurse.
