I noticed my dog has been hobbling. He's not wanting to put his weight on his back left foot some of the time. He has been walking on it a little bit, albeit with a limp. He's a 5 LB Maltese. Is there anything I should check? I looked at his leg and his foot, it doesn't appear that there is a break, but I'm not really sure. Should I just take him to the vet now or maybe wait a little while to see if he gets better? I don't want him to stay hurt, but at the same time, it seems like it comes and goes. He was playing earlier after I noticed him hobbling.

give it a week. Unless its gets worse.

if it were broken you'd know. The fact that its intermittent lameness would make me be more patient with it.

Small dogs have knee issues. That's all I got. Take the pup to a vet.

Yea, I feel like it may be something like a pulled muscle, but I don't know how common that is in a dog.

ETA: he literally walked across the living room on it and just had the slightest limp. I was massaging his leg earlier, so maybe that helped?

Check his toe nails. Sometimes they can get sneaky ingrown nails that can bother them. It happened to the chihuahua I used to have. He acted like he was on his deathbed.

There's nothing a veterinarian can diagnose online with a physical injury like that. They need to see him.

agreed = ours gets that when she has a nail issue. also if he/she was running outside, they could have stepped on a rock. it happens to ours, and she will limp pretty good for a day or so and it gets better.

is the foot swollen any? ours stepped on a bee once, and it made her limp for a week or so - but her foot swelled pretty noticably after the sting

How's his attitude, would you consider your Maltese cross?

Did you check his nails? If I go too long between trimming one of my dog’s nails, he will split it and limp around for a while until I catch him and cut it for him.

That happened to mine once. He stepped on a bee, but you would have thought someone shot him.

I think he just had sensitive feet. Hell, he survived a brush with a coyote with less trouble than he did the ingrown nail and the bee. Granted, he was a bit more skittish in the early mornings when he was out after that. Almost becoming coyote dinner will do that to a baw, I guess.

yeah ours has been jumped by 3 dogs in our apartment complex because people refuse to put them on a leash - 1 time my wife was bit 3 times on the leg - i was out of town.

so happy to get moved into our new house with a fenced yard so she wont have to deal with that crap anymore.

back to the OP - i bet it is a nail issue

My dog just one day couldn’t put any weight on his leg without screaming bloody murder, and he’s pretty tough. It bothered him for a couple of weeks to the point where he wasn’t eating much and was generally very lazy and standoffish. Didn’t know what to do, so I just quit throwing the frisbee and ball with him and let him rest. After about a week and a half he was perfectly fine. No clue what happened

Only if a dead dog is considered a win

Do NOT do this

Agree w giving it a little time and I would restrict activity as much as possible while giving him time

Check nails for broken or fractured nails

If still lame after a 5 days of activity restriction or the lameness is progressing during that time I would rec having him seen
