Over the last few days the water pressure in my house has increased quite a bit. Thought maybe the shower head may have been screwed up (almost pressure washer like) but even the toilets fill up faster and have a louder sound while filling. Even a couple of them keep running (which I turned off the water supply to). Recently I did have the hot water heater replaced, but am not familiar with how this would increase water pressure of both hot and cold.

What could be happening here?

Probably your pressure regulator valve where the water comes into the house. Mine crapped out about 6-7 years ago. I was having issues with the valve on a bathroom sink blowing out O-rings and leaking. Since you said it was both hot and cold, and not just the hot water, that's probably it. Not an expensive fix, but if you don't know what you're doing call the plumber back out that replaced your water heater.

I'm in waterworks ( "other side of the curb" from plumbing), but it sounds like a PRV problem.

Have you checked with a neighbor to see if it could be widespread?

pressure regulator valve is probably bad. I just had to replace mine. I had a pressure release valve that was constantly dripping unless water was running. All good now

pressure regulator valve

Would this have anything to do with the replaced water heater or coincidence?

Are you on a well or on Municipal water service

If well water check you pump pressure setting. Code wise you do not want to go over 85 PSI. i recommend no more the 80 PSI. Most municipal services (Baton Rouge for example) will see 60-65 PSI, New Orleans on the other hand i have see 35 PSI and less at times.

If you are on municipal service, then maybe the water pressure being delivered has increased or as stated above if you have a PRV (Pressure Reducing Valve) you may have to adjust the set point or repair/replace the valve all together.

EDIT: Replacing the water heater will only effect the Hot water service, so if you are having the problem on your water closets as well then it should not be related to the water heater.

As said, almost guaranteed to be the regulator. Go to Hardware store and get this gauge if you want to know for sure:

Connects to any faucet.
If regulator is bad, pressure will be over 100. Needs to be between 55 and 65.

Changing a regulator isn't bad if you have any diy ability. Probably coasts 200 to 300 to pay someone.

Did your plumber install an expansion tank?

If he didn't that could cause the increased pressure. Is your hot water tank spitting water?

PS expansion tanks look like this:

On municipal water. There is an expansion tank.

Would the pressure valve be around the water heater?
