the flight into and out of Lukla was thrilling enough. Took a helicopter back to Lukla from Gorakshep. Wilder ride.

If you have to ask, you can't afford it.

Cousin did it. She said never again. Almost died. Was not the experience she thought she would get.

So she summited Everest only to then realize that it was much harder than she expected it to be ?

To go to base camp it cost me about $1,000 for the guide, sherpa and food and lodging for the week spent hiking. I was required to have travel insurance which was about $100 or $150. And had to fly from Lafayette to Kathmandu which was about $1500 to $2000, don't remember.

Carried a 6’ ladder to the top and climbed that when on the summit.

Didn't hike down. Got a chopper to take us back. 20 minute flight saved 3 days of retracing my steps. I had never been on a helicopter before. Pilot was Italian ex-military, he showed off his flying skills.

I looked it up several years ago when my boss at the time did the summit. It was surprisingly cheap (relative to that sort of thing) - I think in the $3500 range. Can't remember how much that included though.

ETA: reading the thread, it's obvious that would have been all-inclusive "package tour for the dilettante" which is all I would have been looking for, and not "roll your own for the competent person".

If I tried to climb Everest, I would definitely suffer from this. I've never been that high before, so I have no history to draw on. Its just that kind of horrible shite would happen to me just to ruin my - and everyone around's - good time.
