What can I expect? Any reasonable way of getting out of it? State, (Louisiana) not federal.

You might get sequestered and have a little vacay.

As best I can tell, it doesn't work that way with grand juries. If they draw your name, you're pretty much stuck unless you can prove hardship.

I don't know about Louisiana, but I am on it right now in GA. We meet once a month for 6 months, it hasn't been bad. They present the cases to us, then as a group, you decide whether or not to pass it through to court. We have finished before 11:30 every time we have met.

I have a college degree, and I am Law Enforcement. They don't give a shite as long as they got a body in there.

Grand jury is nothing like a trial jury. It’s totally secret, with just the prosecutor presenting witnesses and evidence. Not even a judge. The GJ decides whether the prosecutor has shown probable cause for the charges. If yes, an indictment issues and the person is charged with the crime. The GJ’s job on the case is done.
LA requires a grand jury indictment only for crimes with a life or death sentence at stake, so pretty much murder and agg rape. Sometimes they will run a politically sensitive case through the grand jury (mayor’s son gets a DWI) and do a shite job of presentation. The GJ doesn’t indict, and the DA gets to blame it on the GJ. No one will ever know he tanked the case. That sort of thing is pretty rare, but it happens.
It probably won’t take much of your time, maybe just a day a month or so, especially if it’s a country parish, and it will likely be a very interesting experience. I think the term is only six months.

You must be in Cameron Parish.
Art. 414. Time for impaneling grand juries; period of service
A. A grand jury shall be impaneled twice a year in each parish, except in the parish of Cameron in which at least one grand jury shall be impaneled each year.
B. The court shall fix the time at which a grand jury shall be impaneled, but no grand jury shall be impaneled for more than eight months, nor less than four months, except in the parish of Cameron in which the grand jury may be impaneled for a year.

Nope
Also there's no "be racist and you'll get off" for grand jury. They literally pick numbers out of a box

It is disheartening how few of you know the difference between being on a trial jury and grand jury.

Served on a grand jury once. Five days (maybe 300 cases presented) and then not called back - but we could have been. The first two and a half days we did nothing but drug cases and I soon began to pray, "Please God, let them stop." And then we finished drugs and they started wife and child beaters. One hour later I was so sorry we weren't doing drug cases.
There is some really bad scum out there and it feels like you get it all over you during Grand Jury. I have no idea how cops do what they must do each day.
Touring/inspecting the Jail (a requirement for grand juries in Mississippi) was interesting.
