At that point we would shoot them with a pellet gun, a Benjamin .22 caliber. After a couple of hours we would have a pile of water moccasins and water snakes.

I dont know how I've never been bitten. I've stepped on a few and really close to a wholeeeeee bunch of them. Our place is absolutely infested with the nasty bastards. I killed 13 one summer night coon hunting.
I have a cousin who got bit on the heel of his foot by one. Spent a few days in the hospital.

Dogs handle cottonmouth bites just fine. They swell up like the chick from willy Wonka but ut doesn't mess them up too bad.

I had a big dog bit by either a cottonmouth or copperhead, not sure which, late in the evening. He howled all night long but was reasonably ok the next day.

Never been bit but was up teal hunting some catfish ponds around Jena some years back.
I am not sure what the deal was but we must have decided to hunt right in a nest of them. We shot 6 in the first 30 minutes, the last straw was one swimming directly between my legs, I have never been so still in my life. Dispatched him and said frick this, yall can have them teal. We all called it and went and drank beer.

I had a couple beagles get bit by what I suspect were copperheads, didn’t witness it so I wasn’t positive. They were recovered couple of days.
I had a Pygmy goat killed by a copperhead.Goat was still warm and limp, copperhead was lying inside one hind leg.Goat was bitten twice ,once above left eye and to the side of same eye.
My theory was an artery going to the brain got venom in it and it went straight to brain.
I talked to a vet and he said that had to be what happened,he doubted a copperhead would kill a goat otherwise.

Neighbor's kid was bit by a cottonmouth several years back. It was a graze but got the poison in him.
Pretty talented snek to carry that poison around without any hands

Yes in the early 80s when I was 14. They couldn't give me the antivenom, so i stayed in the hospital several days. Foot swole up bigger than a football, but never any pain or serious issues.

Yes - a very small one. It dumped all its venom and spent two days in hospital. Foot swole up big as a football.

In HS a guy walked off his porch and stepped directly on one and it bit him on the leg. He kicked his leg and the snake slithered into some bushes. He wasn't sure what type of snake it was so he waited a little while to see what would happen. Before long his leg started swelling up like a balloon and when he went to the ER he found out it was a cottonmouth bite. Dr said had he gone to sleep that night he could've died.

Spring of 93, my Dad, Grandfather, and I went fishing out of Hamilton Lake. I was 15 had just gotten my driver's license and took pride into driving Dad's truck, backing the boat into the water, and such with them.
My grandfather was deathly afraid if snakes. Dad ran the trolling motor with Papaw in the middle, and me in the back of the boat. Dad ran his old man under a tree top where a moccasin fell into the boat with us. Mass hysteria ensued.Papaw never cursed around women and was a soft spoken gentleman. He mother fricked my Dad to no end after the sonofabitch was out of the boat and said he wanted to be back on land. The entire ride back to Swartz, he swore he would never go fishing again.
He lived up to that promise.

Not yet.
Caught 26 this year but no bites yet. I’ve seen 89 this year so far, but I don’t try to catch every one I see.
Only 1 copperhead so far this year though.
A bite’s probably coming eventually...but not yet.

Three or four times every summer he would come home with his head all swollen. I would bet he had a minimum 15 moccasin bites to the face in his life.
Wouldn't he have built up immunity to the venom after the first round of bites?
Had a neighbor who said his dog was bitten as a pup,got very sick and the reason the dog aggressively went after water snakes and mocs afterwords with no fear of being bit.

They like to get near the pool pump for warmth in cool weather. I have a 4' snake grabber, so I just pick them up and throw them back in the lake. One struck at me 2 years ago, but either I moved quickly or I got a near sighted snake, he missed.
One time in rural Colorado I was walking to the store and decided to take a shortcut over a rocky area, I got about 20' in and realized how stupid I was, rattlers all over, I went back the way I came in.
