Been seriously thinking of starting up this summer. Totally bored with my normal workouts and could use a new hobby. I know I’ll be on the ground getting my arse whipped for a few weeks but what else should I expect? Would you recommend it for a forty year old?

I’ve done CrossFit for four years. Bored to tears with it. I run, powerlift, and do some Olympic lifting, too.

You like laying fown getting dominated by men?

If you can find an organization that offers mixed martial arts or some kind of military/police officer based self-defense classes then you will be better prepared to fight.
I am a Tae-kwon-Do practitioner. I love my style and its history, but it lacks certain techniques necessary for conventional street fighting. If you are more a tournament type of guy, then I would still recommend MMA because the tournaments usually have larger participation with the added benefit of the extensive physical exercise needed to master MMA fighting.

I’m old and married. Stopped trying to impress bitches long ago. I just want to stay in shape at this point in life while doing something different and difficult.

I teach it on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Do it.
It's fun. It's good cardio and will help keep you flexible and mobile as you age. It has a good community aspect and can give you a competitive outlet for the next 10+ years if you choose to stick with it.

the people at my gym that do it seem to be exhausted after rolling. I'd do it too but I feel like at my age and with some sports injuries, im just asking for trouble.

No but my dad does. Sometimes he can’t event sit on the toilet.

Pain and soreness like you have never felt before.

Nope stick to something easier like kickboxing.

It's a badass workout. It's totally different from anything you've done because the amount of muscle you have doesn't matter at some point. A much smaller guy can have leverage over you and you aren't muscling out of it. I'd recommend it, even for a 40yo. Check out bjjafter40 on Instagram.

Hell I wish I had the time for mountaineering. For now, I settle for a bouldering gym and outside climbing. Every once in a while I do some top roping.

Most of the people responding are clueless. It's a great workout and your age won't be a factor. If you're in BR I can recommend a phenomenal place.

Yes. Do it. JM Modern Jiu Jitsu on Airline if you’re in BR

:raises hand:
BJJ is a very humbling and challenging sport, but also very rewarding.
You don’t realize how very little control you have over your body until your faced with having to defend yourself against someone that has that control/skill. You will be very helpless for a while.
People that train consistently not only have healthier bodies, but also healthier egos.
Most people go through life full-of-shite. They can bend their perceptions of certain things that allow them to stay comfortable and not damage their ego..
You can’t do that in Jiu-Jitsu. You can’t be full-of-shite.
It’s a struggle against another person who, if better than you, will beat you. Plain and simple. There’s no BSing your way through it.
The only way to get good or to be better is to show up, train, get beat, and learn. And do that consistently.
It’s a great martial art with a lot to offer, Outside of the exercise.
And it’s for everyone!! I train with 5’-5’ 140 lbs 20 year olds, and 6’-1” 240 lb 58 year olds.
