I don't know any SEALs but from what I've read/heard it's all about mindset. Andy Frisella had a SEAL on his podcast once and talked a little about BUD/S. The one part that always sticks out to me is when he said their task one day was to just run on the beach. No time limit, didn't know for how long, could make their own pace, they just had to run. He said guys were dropping left and right. Said he couldn't believe it. His quote is something to the extent of "All I could think is I'm on a beautiful beach on a perfect day just running. No ones yelling at me, I'm not having to kill myself, it's just me running on a beach. I just have to put one foot in front of the other over and over. That's it." I think they ended up running for a few hours. Just the way he viewed and processed things was crazy.

I know one from Portland that was probably around the late 60's. I worked with him and his guys for a while. We would sit in a bar, drinking, and finally, he would get up to go pee. His guys would find a group of aboot a dozen guys and bet them each $100 that they couldn't whip his arse when he came out of the bathroom.
They would all jump him when he came out. One by one, they would come flying off of him, with no desire to jump back on. After this happened 3-4 times, he said, "I am a pretty nice guy. I don't understand why all these crowds keep jumping on me. I guess I need to stop going drinking."
He was a helluva nice guy.
I also saw him have a minor difference of opinion about nothing with a giant black guy once. The black guy told him that he would whip his arse. He simply said, "No, you won't", jabbed him in the throat with one finger, and helped him to the ground. I was glad he liked me.

Most guys other than Jocko who is a beast really look like average dudes.
People keep saying this in this thread but that’s not true. Maybe average looking college athletes? You have to be in incredible shape to complete special forces training and have an absolute type A never quit mentality. You don’t need to be in jocko shape or be a body builder, but certainly not ‘avg’ American shape.
Also, like anything even NFL players once you are on a team for awhile you may not be in as great of shape as you were trying to make the team. But those guys are still in very good shape they just know their body and their needs better and don’t waste hours in the gym working a body party that’s not needed to succeed at their profession.

Used to work with one from the Vietnam era. He was old and fat by the time I knew him and I think he as passed now. Even though he was many years past his service days he could pull a knife to your throat quicker than you could even realize he did it. He used to do that for fun... I will also say this, he had no fear in his veins of anybody.

Just a grunt. But very curious about Buds and stories. Is it as hard as people make it out to be? I like David Goggins and Dan Crenshaw. They make it seem like it was hardest thing of their life though.
Not a squid, but I can tell you that the military pipelines are rigorous. The biggest challenge with BUD/s is the mental game and hiding injuries from the instructors. The pipelines aren’t meant to break people physically as much as identify if you’re worth investing in training further, but they do end of breaking people physically. Take care of your body. Eat a shitload. Change your goddam socks. Take care of your boots. Know how to not drown.
Be in phenomenal shape but also not 3% body fat either. Need some fat reserves to float for when you’re too dead to kick your legs. If someone trains for BUD/s for a year or two and makes it their job; then it is a completely passable pipeline. If you have a plan B, you will fail. If it’s “Graduate or die”, you can make it barring severe injury or disqualification.
PS: SEALs are the biggest douchebags in any of the Tiers. Lots of White Oakley 24 year olds.

I was thinking aboot my buddy from Portland and remembered another story. we were in Phoenix one time and him, me and one more guy had gone out to a decent chain, Mexican restaurant. It was clean, tastefully decorated and the Waitresses all wore tight black pants, and red shirts.
We were chatting with our waitress, a REALLY good-looking young lady from Ecuador. She left to go do some waitress things and he commented to us that she was quite attractive, and asked our opinions. The 3rd guy told him that the waitress was a guy. He looked at me and I shook my head yes, and told him to check for an Adam's apple when "she" came back. He had had quite a few drinks by this time. After squinting at her Adam's apple a few times, he informed us that we had better tell him if we were just screwing with him, because he was going to feel and see next time she came back. We finally told him, before anything bad happened.
Good times.

SWCC isn’t led by anyone from seal teams. They are their own organization. If you called a boat guy a seal he’d laugh at you.

I know several that tapped out, but no SEALS personally. Probably very telling.

Actually... The CO of the SWCC Training Command at Stennis is a SEAL officer. I wouldn't have thought that to be the case but I met him in Mandeville earlier this summer.

I've been confused for a SEAL in public many times. I think it's mostly because of my beautiful beard and cryptic tattoos.
But also because I slam my front flippers together violently when I know a fish is coming

Go to SOCNET.com, anyone posting there that says they are a SEAL has been vetted, and is a SEAL. Take some time to read the information on the site first, follow sign up instructions exactly. They dont like people that dont follow instructions, or ask questions about stuff that is already covered on the site introduction.
Also " Phoney Seal check" on the site is the place to verify if that guy at work that says he was a SEAL is for real, they have have access to BUDS training records back to the begining Overwhelming majority of those checked are phony.

SF guys are a very interesting and varied group as A Teams value a variety in their personnel. You can't say there is a "type" of person who makes it in Special Operations other than that they all don't have a Quit button.
One of my podnuhs is an SF dude with a Master's in Landscape Architecture.

Lucy Bustamante, a former WWL anchor, was married to a SEAL who was CO of SBT-22. I was surprised to learn a SEAL was CO of the SWCCs.

At one time the boat teams by doctrine all had either a SEAL CO and a Surface Warfare XO or vice versa. Since they have their own pipeline and NEC now, that may have changed.

I was trying to get back into the boat today from the water. When I got my gut up and over the gunnel, I slid in the boat and across the deck. My grandkids made seal sounds at me. Does that count?

Sorry, I guess what I really meant is that most team guys active and retired look like they belong on a bag of Brawney paper towels than lets say a Navy recruiting campaign.

Plenty of guys don't look like that though.
