Yes. 1969. 11B20. Except for one week on R&R in Hong Kong, I carried an M16 every day of my life for one solid year. It probably took four or five years afterwards for my hand to stop itching where that weapon used to be and loud noises still bother me.

Because it was more fun than worrying about corporate America and bills to pay

We're built for adventure. It's born into us.
It's reason they crossed the seas in a giant wooden boat to who knew where.
It's the reason we sought out Westward expansion.
Gold rush.
Cattle drives
Space
Wherever you were and whatever you did and however bad it was at the core it was still....an Adventure.
Completely natural. Glad you made it home alive sir.
Now your family is your Adventure:)
That's a blessing.

Maybe you just miss being around “your people”. When you came back and were around your family did you ever look at them and think “I’m not like them anymore and I never will be and they don’t even know it”.
It’s not so much that you miss the situation it’s just that you want to be around people that understand you. Deep inside you know that folks that have never experienced what you have can never begin to truly understand you.

Being around like people with a like mission knowing they will cover your arse at all costs. You can't see that in the real world except for maybe a close family member.
The fricker you work next to at the plant or office or school or whatever, could not give two shits about you. They are out for themselves first.
Not so in combat. They might not like you or you, them, but they know you each have to depend on each other regardless.

Terrible times. But why in the frick do I miss it so much? Been over 10yrs and I think about it everyday. I mean multiple times a day everyday. I hated it. Hot, I mean fricking hot, and miserable.
I never served, but my dad was in Vietnam in heavy combat with the 1st Cav (airmobile). He never would talk to me in any detail about it. I just remember he once said how he "missed it" at times even though he also complained of how miserable it was.

Because it's an easy time. I miss the food cooked for you, I miss just shooting the breeze and working out when not on mission. The routine, same clothes every day. Real life, bills, etc....it's not as much fun.
And yes, the rush is something else. I wasn't infantry and still a rush.

You don’t miss it. You miss them and the camaraderie.

You frickers sure do love your acronyms
To the vets in this thread, thanks for your service. I wish all of y’all the best in your future endeavors. And like the OP did, if you ever feel like you need to vent, the OT is a great place to do it.

Feeling a need to exercise those qualities is natural and can be achieved in a few different ways. Or so my therapist tells me.
My sex therapist says the same thing about masterbation.

Thanks for your service! I did 32 years and deployed to exciting places like Kuwait and Qatar (which are actually much safer than Jxn, MS). I was in the rear with the gear. I do regret not getting to Iraq or Afghanistan.

I was an Armor guy in a mech infantry brigade. I still miss it every day, but after 22 years I hung it up. "Embrace the suck".

Never deployed to a hot zone but went to JRTC at Polk and JRMC at Hohenfels. I’d like to think I somewhat helped those guys before they deployed by playing OPFOR lol

Not infantry. Never went to war. However, I do miss the extremely difficult water training (drownproofing) I experienced. I hated every second of it while I was in it. I miss being deployed at sea and being with my second family. Don't be sorry and don't feel like the odd man out.

Not infantry but was in artillery and in OIF I. I know exactly what you mean and how you feel.
Best way I heard to describe being in the Marines (military) was that 90% of it really sucked but that 10% of awesomeness made it totally worthwhile.
I also like "I wouldn't trade it for a penny but you couldn't pay me a million dollars to do it again"
Just know you are definitely not the only one that thinks that way.
